What the fuck is going on here then?

Is it the Ruski's or someone else?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-26379722

Seems very ominous.

Confused

Russia has a large naval port there and it's hard to believe this isn't to do with security for it.

Essentially it's Syria. USA wanted a gas pipe through Syria, Assad said no dice he was then declared a terrorist and had to be eliminated, A Syrian pipe line would break the Russian monopoly on EU gas.

Russian interests vs our own. Ukraine is a transit country for Russian gas.

https://en.ria.ru/infographics/20090609/155206402.html

Russia wants it to remain a transit country leaning towards Russia. USA, EU want the same but want them to be favourable to EU and US interests.

In December 2013 the US overtly gave $5bn to the 'rebels'.

Imagine if there was a revolution in Cuba. America would fill it's little end of the island country with troops. There would be no headlines about the US troop surge, just a paragraph on page 39.

The US regularly invades countries half way around the world to "bring democracy". When Russia sends in troops to protect ethnic Russians and Russian citizens - they're invading? They're evil? Let's see how the media spins this. Remember to keep an objective mind.

But you're good little Westerners; you hate the Russians as much as your leaders do, don't you?

Seriously though, don't really know what's going on, let's see how it develops.

Putin will annexe Ukraine in a heartbeat if he thinks he can get away with it. And by that I mean him personally, screw anyone else.

That's not to say that the EU and Septics wouldn't do the same: it's just a matter of ability rather than desire.

Invasion or not, it only depends which side of the fence you sit.

OK, pendulum too far the other way maybe. But someone has to argue for the other side/play devil's advocate so we don't just have a circlejerk.

But: Crimea is majority Russian. Eastern Ukraine is in favour of Yanukovych and Russia. There are two sides to this, it's not (entirely) a case of evil Russia trying to extend its influence and control. It's like the England north-south divide, but a lot more serious.

https://www.russianmarketer.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/ukraine_election_map.gif

Textbook case of tyranny of the majority.

It's not good vs evil, it's evil vs evil. Whether it's Russian tanks or NATO ones rolling down the street, half of Ukraine is going to be oppressed.

The only winning move is not to play.

Well whatever happens there are not going to be NATO tanks rolling into Ukraine. It will be Russian tanks or none at all, and we will "strongly condemn" Putin's actions and draw rude cartoons of him in the papers.

In fact there are already squadrons of attack helicopters flying over the border and the "unidentified troops" are pretty clearly Russian (not only because of their Russian equipment but because nobody else would have any interest in hiding their identity...and they speak Russian)

It always amazes me why people in this country go out of their way to try and show us in as poor a light as they can and then claim to be some sort of enlightened one and all the rest of us must be sheep/blinkered/indoctrinated. All they are doing is fuelling the fires for those who want to cause trouble. Give them the ammunition to hate us even more.

I'm all for open honesty, but looking for the cracks for the sake of it just to make themselves feel better or give them the feeling that their finger is on the pulse when in reality they know as little as the rest.

Well tell me if you disagree with any part of my summary here:

- Ukraine is a country divided between pro-Russian east and anti-Russian west
- Revolution occurs - pro-western (Ukrainian western) government comes into power, replacing previous pro-Russian government
- Crimea is majority Russian citizens/ethnics
- Many in Crimea want to be independent from the new pro-Ukrainian nationalism/anti-Russian-influence government
- Tensions rising, Crimean nationalists & pro-Russian activists begin rioting
- Russia sends in troops

And this is where we are now. Why did Russia send in troops? My guess is because it has interests in Crimea - it's Black Sea fleet is based there & most Crimeans are Russians. Beyond that I don't know their reasons, if there are any. I know just as much as anyone else, of course.

How do you know they are Russian troops?

The POINT is these troops have no markings, and haven't declared who they are.

It is very interesting, highly likely to be Russian, but if so, then can't see it being legitimate, otherwise there would be no reason to hide the insignias

Well Russian helicopters have been spotted flying into Crimea

https://www.itv.com/news/story/2014-02-28/ukraine-russia-yanukovich-crimea/

Supposedly we'll find out more soon but the troops are suspiciously well and uniformly equipped, so don't seem to be citizen militia. I can't think of a reason for anyone else to obscure their identity other than Russians; local nationalist groups or pro-Tymoshenko groups would want to proclaim as loudly as possible that they were securing territory. There's also the fact that the Sevastopol naval base is home to a Naval Infantry brigade already. So I'm guessing they're Russian, or maybe they're Ukrainian army units that are not loyal to the new government.

I'll take a guess as to their intent, if they're Russian - to prevent infiltration by pro-Tymoshenko/western groups (hence occupation of the airport) in order to allow for Crimea to express its desire for independence from the rest of Ukraine and remain firmly within Russia's influence.

Speculation.

Armed Russians are doing in the Southern and Eastern Ukraine what the Ukrainian far right Svoboda and Right Sector did in Kiev. East and Southern "Ukraine" are mostly ethnic Russian. The territory was only combined into the "Ukraine" in the early 1950s to counterbalance the Ukrainian population that were anti-Russian/pro-German, a sizable number of which fought on the side of their German liberators during WW2.

The Ukrainian far right are both anti-Russian and anti-Jewish. They hate the Russians both historically and for their occupation during the CCCP, and especially the undocumented and ignored Holodomor under Stalin, which deliberately starved a few million Ukrainians. The Jews they identify with Marxism and Communism, since a considerable number of the influential upper heirarchy of the Soviet Communist Party were Jewish. That their recent revolution has been funded by Jewish George Soros, and the usual funnels like the National Endowment for Democracy, to the tune of around $5 billion, appears to have escaped them.

The Russian will not give up the Southern or eastern Ukraine, since they see it as defending Russians, their Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol, and the former ruler was ejected via an armed mob, and not the "democracy" of the ballot box that the West usually lectures our Slavic chums about. The ethnic Russians view the Kiev mob as Nazis. The Crim Tartars are a Muslim wild card to add to the mix.

A Georgia/South Ossetia style confrontation seems likely. We'll see if it escalates a la 1914. You fanboys can all then join up, you'll be home before the leaves fall Wink

There's also the prospect that Ukraine as part of the IMF austerity package deal becomes a NATO member and gets a large number of sites in the NATO "defensive" missile "shield".

If China buys up that big slab of Idaho as PRC soil and parked some (obviously) defensive missiles in it, I'm sure the boys in Washington DC would be pleased.

Putin has "asked" the Duma if he can deploy Russian troops into Ukraine.
