Hey guys

new to the forum and new to bikes (well, the kind with engines anyhow) I passed my car test at 17 and been quite happily motoring for 12 years with no accidents and nicked for speeding once (34mph on a deserted 30mph) dealt with by a speed awareness course. various cars in that time ranging from hot hatches to Morris Minors...

I've been thinking about switching to 2 wheel commute for quite a while now and have started making some steps towards it.

Having never ridden anything, other than a 50cc scooter round the fields, I thought it would be a good idea to do a new riders course to understand the fundamentals of how bikes work. With the mornings course I was doing figure 8s and slaloms considerably better than my coursemate (a 17yr old scooterist who wanted to learn geared bikes)

I've booked in to do my CBT on the same bike I used on the course, a Suzuki gn125 on the 16th.

I'm thinking that I will prob stick to smaller bikes but the plan is to do a year or so's riding on the CBT (i'm looking at CGs) and then do the direct access and then maybe move to something a little bigger but maybe not. I could do an a1 or a2 test but its nice to know that I could ride without restrictions...

If you do your direct access for a class A license, your full license will start from when you pass your test. If you do the restricted route and go for the A2 test your A2 license will start when you pas the A2 test but when you qualify for the unrestricted 'A' test and pass it your 'full license' pass date will be reset to the date you passed the 'A' test, as far as some insurance companies are concerned. There have been a couple of threads on here about it recently. What I'm saying is if you are going to end up taking the A test you might as well do direct access now and save losing a couple of years of riding experience off your record.

The plan is definitely to go direct access.

One of my goals in life is to collect every vehicle license going. Its a truly silly aim, but whats life if we don't do those things we want to? The next one after the bike is going to be the D license (Bus) it'll prob take me another 2 decades and priorities might change, but I am gonna get there!

Shame you were not closer to Portsmouth. I know a very good school that will get you through DAS, Mine! Laughing

You've set yourself a goal. I'll set you one then. A realistic one and an unrealistic but possible one.

Get your DAS done by May Day, get a bike and join us on the May Day ride out to Hastings.

Might not be realistic but its possible.

Failing that. Brighton Burn up in September. See you then. Thumbs Up

Good on ya! Even if your thinking of sticking to small bikes, the DAS is great fun, learned a shed load and big bikes are fun =]

Ahoy there, welcome to the fun.

What's a "new riders course"? The CBT is Compulsory Basic Training, I'd be minded to ORLY? at any training school who tell you that you need pre-CBT training.

Either way, it's great that you enjoyed it, and it just gets better with experience.

Oh, depending on budget and your inside leg, we'd probably recommend either a YBR or a Varadero 125 as a first bike. CGs are simple and rugged, but they're getting long in the tooth and they do not, in actual fact, thrive on abuse.

If money was no object then I'd certainly consider doing DAS sooner rather than later but its a huge wodge of cash to find quickly so give it a year, stashing a little away each month and it should be fine.

Brighton Burnout is a no-go for me, I'm going to be working at a festival in Kent at that point

I wouldn't nessecarily object to doing it in Portsmouth, I hail from Wickham originally and commuted to Brighton for 2.5 years but the instructor where I am currently going is a decent bloke and we get on - so better the devil you know eh?

Roger

The new riders course is basicly the first half of the CBT (i.e before you go out on the road) and no-one told me that I should do it but myself. It wasn't expensive and I do suffer from confidence issues and anxiety when it comes to things that I have not done before where there is pressure to perform so I thought that getting some experience in was a good idea rather than having a full blown panic attack on the day of the CBT and effectively wasting my dosh!

Forkie, Tractor, HGV, LGV, Bus, Minibus, Train, Hovercraft, Speedboat, Spaceship, and shopping trolley licenses

I'd inevitably like to do the same. I like anything with wheels and an engine that moves.

I had a guy out on CBT not long ago. The only part of his licence he did not have was motorcycles. He was even getting lessons for his commercial helicopter license. He had his private one.

Quick CBT related question btw. When you pass I presume you are given a bit of paper that says so and you need to send it off to the DVLA?

You get a bit of paper but you don't send it anywhere it just validates your provisional entitlement. Don't lose it though when you do the proper licence you need to show it for MOD1 and 2.

Something tells me, she won't be losing any papers showing entitlement or test pass sheets.

Welcome to the forum btw, MissTasmin.

Ah, fair enough. I did get a bit of performance anxiety on my CBT and my honest opinion is that there's too much in it for one day. Giving yourself time to assimilate the basics is a smart idea.

You get a DL196 certificate on completion of the CBT, which validates your provisional entitlement. You can actually get a copy for a small fee. When you do your tests though, do not lose your module 2 pass certificate. Laminate it, put it in a bank vault. The DVLA can and do lose categories of entitlement.

Indeed, the general advice here - and even from DVLA employees if you can catch them in their human form - is to never surrender a license. Just "lose" it, so that you can "find" it again if necessary. It's just a box to tick, no hassle or expense.

My first Missus passed her test years ago and rode every bike I owned up to and including a 750 Commando. The 750 Honda was too wide for her to put her feet safely on the ground and the 980 Laverda was simply too heavy for her, and she COULD ride too.
