Yes... I started a thread about feminism.
I've had a few glasses of wine, and I thought it would be a really interesting subject to talk about. Not seen any other thread that has broached the subject - but would be cool to see what peoples thoughts are.
So... My wife is a feminist (as are all women I imagine), and I personally consider myself a feminist. I am all about equal rights and breaking down the barriers that divide us. When someone thinks of a feminist they tend to think of a butch lesbian, someone who is very argumentative and a man hater, and burn their bra etc. However I don't mean that, I am simply pro equality - unfortunately the man haters give feminists a bad name, it's really worth listening to intelligent feminists as you will learn a lot.
The way I see it is that men currently rule the world. Our politicians are men, our prime ministers and presidents are mostly men, our army is full of men. The media is all about image, women have to be sexy to get noticed, pop stars are all about sex, male presenters are into their 70's and their female counterparts are big breasted 20 somethings. If you really take stock and look at the way our world is set up - it's a mans world. I'm 15 stone 5 foot 7 and look in the mirror and see a fit, good looking guy (i'm chunky)... where as my sister in law has just gone on a diet because she feels fat and she is 8stone 5 foot 4 girl who is stunning... It's not a trait you're born with. Women have been conditioned to hate themselves and they look in the mirror and see ugliness.. It's something we're used to but never really think about.
Now I never used to think like this, I used to be pretty ignorant, but have talked and argued with a lot of feminists and have slowly come to understand how they see they see the world. It's raised a lot of questions and I have started to notice things in the world that are very unfair and which never occurred to me before.
I now know there is a long way to go to equality - but I want to know what you think. It would be interesting to hear your point of views?
I'm still learning about feminist issues and honestly consider myself largely ill informed. The question I keep asking myself is how would I feel if this was happening to me, and it's surprising how often you get the answer..."well I wouldn't put up with it".
Anyhow I've broken the taboo, the floor is open to hear your thoughts? ____________________ Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. |

Grab a pot of coffee...
Oh sure equality of opportunity is fine.
What I am not ok with is the fact that many women want the rights but do not want the responsibilities which happen to come with all these rights.
An example is the US Florida I think, in that most of the time overwhelmingly it is MEN who pay alimony, 2% of women pay alimony and yet a number of feminists think it is wrong for women to pay alimony and have been campaigning to change the law.
I am also not ok with the fact that the law treats individuals unfairly:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=3738558
YT channel girlsayswhat gives an insight into individuals being more equal than others.
This feminazism is nasty and insidious, whereby in order to 'become equal' men get discriminated against.
--------------------------
Anyway it is NOT as clear cut as many make it out to be, consider the phrase:
Women are property of men.
The full quote is women are the property of men, and men are beasts of burden for women.
Or oh women are mistreated in Asia...
Sometimes they are, but consider this in Asia, in Asian societies it is the responsibility of the man to provide for everything, to pay the bills, buy the house, pay mortgage, car food, and bills of the house. Women can work but any money they earn they can keep traditions dictate that any money they earn is theirs and if they have to share their money with their husbands then their husbands are worthless.
---------------------------
Lastly there is no gender pay gap, between the ages of 21-34 women earn MORE than men now. Plus many of the jobs which are compared are comparing apples to oranges. Hell there is a teacher who is less qualified than me, she gets paid £2 more an hour than me for exactly the same job. ____________________ "It's easy to attack and destroy an act of creation. Women want to be equal only when it comes to rights and wages. When there are obligations and regulations they just play the ,,I'm a girl'' card. How is that equal? ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

A couple of years ago I turned up at the Oakdene Cafe with a some friends. I rode my bike there, he rode his bike with his wife as pillion. We had had a good few hours ride in the sun with clear roads and little traffic. Some guy bedecked in leather waistcoat made a flippant remark to the guy asking how he "fit them both on the back of yer bike, haw haw haw!"
Normally I try not to let comments like that get to me, but that really irritated. Why can't I be seen as an equal person? It's like calling someone darling or sweetheart. Not a problem as a friendly greeting towards someone you don't know, but if a guy knows my name and still insists on calling me that it's just plain rude and condescending. ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10

Oh god does anyone really want me to start going on about this?
I'm a bit tired of talking about feminism now. Also, I hope you're happy, this thread is going to go on FOREVER now that you've started it!
Essentially:
- It's an outadated ideology followed by people with a victim complex and suffering severe confirmation bias who want to be modern suffragettes
- The wage gap is a myth based on a total misinterpretation of the statistics
- They hear anecdotes and then ruthlessly over-analyse them to interpret them as sexist, and then 'campaign' against the perceived sexism
- It attempts to shift responsibility onto others for problems they believe they face, but rarely or never actually encounter. And the problems they do encounter are usually manufactured, over-analysed, and/or exaggerated, and they demand society bend over backwards to make their lives free of negative emotions
- It claims that everyone is a feminist if they agree with one or two basic civil rights issues that they support (as do we all obviously), but this as flawed as asking a communist if they support equal rights for different races and then telling them this makes them a capitalist. Or asking a liberal if they believe corporations should be more responsible to the government and then telling them this makes them a Nazi.
- Wahh wahh wahh there are more men in government and boardrooms - why? Firstly, BECAUSE DEMOCRACY, secondly, BECAUSE COMPETENCE. We've had a woman PM, the glass ceiling is officially broken. Women will get into "muh boardrooms" when they are competent and experienced enough to get in.
- Feminism can pretty much be summed up as "I'm going to promote my gender and make it illegal for you to do or say anything about it, or anything that might possibly trigger negative emotions in me" ie MUH FEELINGS
That's all off the top of my head, those who saw my debate in the POF thread know I've said enough. Though that stuff was less about feminism and more about the stupidity of blindly entwining one's own personal beliefs with any ideology, especially one so absolutist on social issues (or any issues). ____________________ I'm autistic. I try not to let adverts on TV in the UK and the US that portray men as being a bit thick compared to their cool, competent female partners get to me, but they really irritate. "So easy even a man can do it", anyone? Why can't I be seen as an equal person?
If the situations depicted in that kind of ad were reversed and a woman was portrayed as stupid or incompetent there would be an all-too predictable outcry from the Grauniad and web sites like Jezebel. Sure, feminism used to mean something different, but modern feminisim as championed by large sections of the media is a power grab, plain and simple. Feminist talking heads want women to be able to behave in any way they like: you go, girl! At the same time, they insist that we must never criticise a woman, however shallow, misguided or selfish her actions may be. Because, judgement, right?
In the same breath people like Amanda Marcotte judge men for anything and everything. Men work too much. They don't work enough. They're inferior to women because they don't talk and think like women. Their hobbies are childish. They're all potential rapists, abusers or perverts. They don't show their softer side. They're not masculine enough. They're incompetent parents. They're immature because they don't want to get married when women tell them they should.
Confused? Contradictory? Unfair? Well, that doesn't matter because men, like, have had it easy for so long, right? And it matters because these feminist figures are the people who set the tone for what passes for discourse. Of course, any similarly critical language directed at women results in excoriation from the mainstream media, frequently with dire consequences for that person. Look what happened to Larry Summers even when he based his hypothetical comments on published scientific studies.
It goes on and on. Most worrying to me, as a father of two young boys, it that it's not clear to me that there is any point at which it will end. Feminists will immediately jump in and say "when we achieve equality" but in many areas (A level grades, university attendance, doctors in general practice) women have already far exceeded parity. And still feminists insist that women have a raw deal and face tremendous inequality.
The pendulum has swung too far and the consequence will probably be a continued decline in male engagement in civic society. I can't see that this will be good for any of us.

Feminism.
This used to be the top Google image hit for "slap".
https://dublinopinion.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/slap.jpg
Now you have to search for "man slapping woman", and even then, the server feels manspoileted when it indexes this reduced-resolution version. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
