Hi guys,

A little intro about me, I've been riding since September. Ive owned about 4 50cc scooters. Love them. However I've put my hand deep into my pocket and just bought a brand new Ybr 14 plate. The new shape one, I really like th cowl.

Ive had a RS50 so I understand the gears.

What im wondering is... have I wasted money on a slow machine? I use the bike to get to and from work and to my girlfriends house. The max speed I would need to get is max 60ish as I dont go down many fast roads. Duel carridge with speeds limits of 60.

I do love the bike and im so eager to get it. Should be tuesday. But is this a good bike? Im 6ft and about 14 stone. Not chubby at all. Will I look silly.

Im looking to use this for a good two years before I even want a change in cc/bhp as im saving for a house.

Was my purchase good

Thanks guys

A few people on here will say you've wasted ya money.

As the value will drop once it leaves the showroom.

I had a YBR 2013 reg (same shape as yours) and they're good

I think about 60 will push it but I got 65 out of mine.

But if it makes you happy then all good

When I had it I was 5 10 and 16 stone and it was fine for me

Thank you for the fast reply bud.

Ive seen youtube videos of them doing 60 fingers crossed I should br able to get that.

Im not to worried about the value. As it will be passed down to younger brothers oncr I do pass in years to come. Overall I think it will save me money.

I was spending an average of 80 weekly seeing my mrs getting to work and the odd repair to my crappy mopeds.

How does yours run mate.

I don't have it now i passed me test. they are great I use to get around 280 miles to a tank.

Only thing I'd be careful of is it suffers from false neutrals and sometimes when you're in 2nd gear it can suddenly jump to neutral.

but that might just be me.

To be honest tho I would get your test out the way as soon as you can.

Looks like they stopped doing that colour style now lol.

The white one does look cool.

it's interesting how they're matching colours with the CBF125

Colour scheme are the exact same. Black Red White.

Although the CBF is so tiny.

Im happy if I can hit 60. Smile

No not a few - most. Why? Because it's painfully, obviously and undeniably true. Might as well stand in the street setting fire to a grand's worth of tenners. Buying a new 125 is, quite frankly, stupid - especially if you're not Mr. or Ms. Moneybags.

Apt user name alert. Now, to answer your question. Yes. Yes you have. You've wasted a decently sized pile of cash, as it happens. Which is something you would been told far in advance had you asked advice here.

In fact, there is a prominently placed sticky thread on this very forum (headed "A Duffer's Guide to Getting A Licence + Newbie Biker Links") - where it is noted that "You can pick up a boring and unattractive 125 with tax and mot for about £500 if you're smart and look in the ads." See here:

First ditch the flintlock. Secondly, I ride 125s regularly and am your build. Getting 60 out of them is bloody hard and feels cruel. Hit a headwind and a hill and it's almost impossible without caning fuck out of them. But then, I have what some would probably regard as an excess of mechanical sympathy. That said, such sympathy is not an entirely bad thing if you're going to be riding such small capacity four strokes. Why? Because they crave maintenance - neglect of final drive chain, tyre pressures and oil can all have a quite dramatic effect on performance and handling. Thirdly you will need to break the bike in - which will probably mean keeping it to half revs for the first thou.

YbrGoon wrote:
But is this a good bike?

No. Not really. The best that can be said is it's not bad. But basically it's overpriced and underpowered.

Now that you've bought a new one, yes. Yes you will.

Had my YBR for about 6 months before doing my test. Mine was on a 10 plate.

It will Pi*ss all over 60mph. I had mine up to 75 on a flat with the wind behind me. I used to commute via a couple of dual carriageways and it was unusual for me to be doing less than 60-65.

The only thing that slows these bikes down is 1.) hills. this when you know you're on a 125 as the engine just doesn't have the gumf for it and 2.) head winds. These are not very pleasant on any unfared bike but on a 125 it's painful. Hitting hills with a headwind is what made me want to do my test.

Apart from that, I loved my YBR. Very comfortable and easy to get on with. Going from a 50 to the YBR will be an obvious noticeable step up.

If you plan on keeping it a couple of years then I think you've done the right thing.

Good luck.

Eh. I won't say you didn't get yours up to 75, but I'd still be surprised unless you were a midget.

I quite easily got my YBR to say I was doing 75 on the speedo, but it wasn't doing much over 65 actual at that point. If the speedo said 62-ish, I was pretty much going at the same speed as a lorry restricted to 56. So.

Hi buds,

Thank you for all the reply's.

All in all I am happy with the bike. Ive wasted so much money fixing bikes I would buy pre owned. I made it my mission to sell all 3 of scooters which grabbed me an total of 2200. Ive had serveral off roading bikes and gained so much confidence from riding them. That gave me the boost to buy myself a new bike. Something I always wanted. Im a big fan of naked bikes. It was between the cbf and cbr. I plan to keep this very well maintained and in the best condition. So that in say two years time when my finances are settled I can get a decent ammount back towards a bigger cc model. I only bought this to commute, with the mpg these offer I cant go far wrong. And 60 is relativity easy to hit. Even without thrashing. The new models have a nice cowl.

I do appreciate all your replies.

You won't get a decent amount back in two years.

Only being able to do 60 will mean you're not keeping up with traffic.

Did you buy with finance?

Ybr's from 2008-2012 are still hitting the grand mark. That'll be enough to fund my test atleast.

60mph would be more than enough considering I kept up with traffic majority of the time on a mph aprilia sr50 scooter.

It may seem like alot of money but it all started from a £200 project bike.

I know I could have bought better, but I actually like the YBR.
