PostPosted: 20:03 - 10 Mar 2014    Post subject: What to clean rear wheel with Reply with quote

Hey. Cleaned my bike earlier today and the only area I struggled with was the rear wheel, mainly the chain side. I commute all year round on it and hence a lot of chain lube ends up on it and I can't seem to even get beneath all the crud on he chain side of the wheel. Was just wondering what products, brushes or cloths people use to get the rear wheel clean?

I use diesel petrol mix but only because i have about 5 gallons of it.

WD40 cleaner or G101 will do well too.

This, or toothbrush.
Or if your feeling thrifty wonder wheels, pretty sure it can be corrosive to bare metal though.

If you have serious build up scrape the worst of it off with something soft like a plastic scraper then hit it with gunk/jizer type water washable degreaser and hose it off well. You might need a second dose if the gunk is a few mm thick and once hosed down again treat it to the parafin/wd40 treatment then finish with a citrus based light degreaser......once you've got rid of all the oily crap use wonder wheels to clean off any remaining baked on brake dust and the such then finish with a light coat of wash wax and once dry a wipe over with wd40 as it's easier to wash the crap off come next wash time!

Swarfega neat on kitchen paper.

No elbow grease needed, 3 or 4 passes, and it's clean.

This stuff, by the way, not the green jelly.

Paraffin. Paintbrush to apply it, washing up brush to scrub the grease and dirt loose then a jetwash to remove it. Thumbs Up

But that stuff has sand/gravel particles in it. Surely that can't be good for the paint work?

I had some hard to clean Alloys on a car once, nothing seemed to touch them but then a friend recommended Oven cleaner believe it or not!!

I was sceptical at the time, but always use it now and makes the job easy.

It doesn't have sand particles in it, it has compressible beads that aren't harmful to surfaces, which help break down the grease.

I use it on the zx6r, with no deterioration or flaking of the wheels one iota. In fact, a securing the bike does more damage....make of that what you will.

Tooth brush and paraffin but the smell that gets embedded on you isn't good if your working the rest of the day.

I just use the truck wash that we have at work, spray it on, jet wash off.

Citrus degreaser. No elbow grease required. Non harmful to just about any surface, environmentalists will love you for it and and makes your bike smell like an orange grove.

Awesome on chains too.

Good stuff all round Thumbs Up

I'm pinching Marki's idea here but this is amazing on chrome and removing chain grease.

WD40 and wet Wipes do the job for me! Is there anything WD40 cannot do?! I swear I would bath in the bloody stuff if I could.

This is my answer for greasy / oily cleaning. It's a solvent, so you don't want to get it on your chain (I wouldn't have thought)
