If bike got stolen from Mechanic's?

Just wondering. Last time my bike went in for MOT, the local garage phoned and said it was ready. When I arrived, I paid and then he said "it's out the back all ready for you." So I went round to the side of the garage and there on a pavement was a row of about 6 bikes, and mine had the keys in it.

For Insurance purposes, if the bike got nicked from there, who's problem would it be?! I guess they'd be covered for bikes locked in their premises overnight, but out in the open (albeit still on their premises) sounds like they wouldn't be covered if keys are in it?

I'm assuming they don't just leave bikes out there all day, and maybe only put the keys in it when they know you'll be there in x minutes time. Anyone else come across this?

Quite a few mechanics do this, it worries me. Before I used to do my own mechanics I always told them not to leave keys in.

They would be liable no matter what there insurance decides on the matter

You'll find that all garages do this near enough, the one I worked in and most other one I know of does. Keys were left in every car all day, they would be parked up and down the road and across the road in the car park. (Quiet area though to be fair). That way no one can lose the keys, and if any vehicle needs to be moved you don't need to try and find the person who has the keys etc. guys owned the garage 30 years, always done it, nothings ever been stolen as far as I knew of

Lax security, there is no acceptable explanation for leaving the keys in the vehicle.

Same thing happens in my yard at work on a daily basis. Keys left in ignition for the next driver. Or for anyone else that happens to walk through the open gate and drive off in whatever van they please.

Problem at my work is even if you put the keys where they're supposed to be, that's only a 15 meter walk (through another unlocked door)!

But they've never had a van/bike stolen so everything's fine, until the day that it happens.

The fact that they do it probably illustrates that they've never had a bike stolen.

Yes, yours could be the first (and only) one taken like that, but if tiny theoretical risks like that bother you, why are you riding a bike?

The garage I've used do this but they keep it inside and there's always somebody in there working on something so I don't care.

Leaving it outside with the keys in is a bit dodgy. Bit like leaving a "free if stolen" sign on it.
