Well thats cleared it up for me just watched some knob from East Sussex council explaining about potholes apparently due to the bad weather its just a layer of tarmac that lifts and leaves a small hole, But you'll all be glad to hear that they're perfectly safe and not a danger Shocked
and there's me getting all worried for nothing about my front wheel getting swallowed up by something resembling a fecking sinkhole Smile

Round here the Council just elects to not see potholes.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2254/13136556575_1e2ac97989_z.jpg

Surrey County Council 'can't find' a pothole half a foot deep and two foot across with an annotated map from a qualified cartographer, a full road name and exact GPS co-ordinates provided. And it hasn't been repaired, I checked.

And even when they do decide it's too bad to ignore, their 'fix' is pouring some tarmac in the hole, stomping it down a bit, then calling it a day.

on of the last corners on the way home is now no longer identifiable as a road either

I reported some awfully deeply sunken manhole covers on the A6110 near the white rose on a round about.

I think they just decided to fill one in with tarmac and left it for everyone else to fill in, the other 2 that also got reported have just been left, they obviously don't matter.

Cowboys, they really are. I'm glad I'm a "student" so I don't pay the council tax for the police, ambulances, fire engines and the safe roads I don't use

All I'll say is 'Haymarket', by Picadilly Circus in London.

It's the bumpy road Jeremy Clarkson was moaning about as he was being rocked up and down on Top Gear a few weeks ago on bicycles.

Absolutely the bumpiest road around town. Well documented on the net too. Needs totally repaving but nothing done for years now.

There's a section on the A12 with potholes on a long sweeping bend with a 10 metre section of potholes, all about 4/5 inches deep - just off the centre of the fast lane. Impossible to see in the dark until you're on top of them. Someone WILL die because of those at some point.

I just can't get my head around why the roads in the country are so bad... It's an old observation, but continental Europe's roads are like a fucking race circuit in comparison.

If you think England's roads are bad, you should see the state of the Manx roads. I thought I was in heaven when I was riding over in the UK.

I didn't think they were that bad when I was over there - not up on the main routes over the hills and stuff anyway. Mind you, I was in a car though - view things a bit differently on four wheels.

Beautiful place to live, by the way - jealous.

Most of the course isn't too bad (except the section from Ginger hall to Ramsey is bumpy as hell, other parts though are terrible. As you say, probably more noticeable on a bike (I don't drive a car).

As for living here. Tbh, after 13 years, I've had enough of the place and desperately want to get back to th UK.

Local councils don't repair potholes on A roads or motorways!
Maintenance of trunk roads is contracted out, the contract is awarded to the lowest bidder, draw your own conclusions.

Motorway maintenance is overseen by the Highways Agency then contracted out, Amey Construction seems to have that stitched up!

The only way these contractors can make any money, having won the contracts with the lowest tender, is to do as little as is, legally and contractually, allowable!

There was a R4 program, last week, which highlighted this problem with many councils complaining that due to the current system of contracting out, they have lost the ability to direct the repair and maintenance of the roads to where it is most needed!
The councils are now at the mercy of the few mega contractors running the roads and have, virtually, no say in the programming of work.

You can console yourself, next time you hit a pot hole, with the fact that, that non repaired pothole has hepled boost the profits of one or more plc!

Try to remember, "We're all in it together"! Rolling Eyes

There's a road around the corner from me and the bike is almost uncontrollable due to the tram lining effect caused by the 3 inch deep trench next to where they've dug up a lengthways section.

I complained about a year and half ago on fixmystreet and they re-layed the tarmac on a street around a mile away, when it didn't even need doing!

Then again, I'm in a town known for it "Four thousand potholes in Blackburn, Lancashire"

When I moved to where I live now, I reported a pothole and it was filled really quickly, summat daft like within a week, I was gobsmacked!

I've just reported one today, same road, almost in the same position, told them that it's on the riding line for a bike, wonder how long it'll take this time.

I will add it's not a through road, it's just the 150 metre or so stretch for the cul de sac I live in.

We had a water meter put in at the end of our drive and the tarmac they put round it all collapsed.

We had to drive round it or risk coming off the bikes it was that bad.

How many people have their very own pothole Cool

I'm glad potholes aren't a danger. I'll tell my testicles that as soon as I've retrieved them from my fucking earholes, having hit a particularly evil one in Chatham earlier. Genuinely staggered that both of my wheels are still straight after this incident.

Obviously potholes are not a problem, or someone would be doing something about it, wouldn't they?
MAG? BMF? No? The AA? RAC? Don't care about motorcyclists perhaps. Ok, Councils? All contracted out and no further influence. Government then? Nope, aren't interested in what the electorate think.
See, not an issue.

Heading towards or away from manc?

There was a bad set just as you got to a bridge over a road between rammy and bury but that's been done now,

There's a set in the middle lane heading to rammy by the 400 yards to lane ending sign.

There's a horrible one on the A23 heading south under the bridge towards Merstham. Looks like it would swallow the front wheel and lead to certain splattery. Always makes me nervous.
