I'm looking to move up from my ZXR 400 and can't decide which bike is more hardcore (a better pedigree).

Can you help me decide...

I'm after a race rep that's pretty uncompromising and good for Sunday blasts. I was set on the SRAD 750, but have learnt the 2001/2002 R6 had a reputation for being hardcore with it's skitsh handling and aggressive body position. What's putting me off the R6 is its non USD forks and bars above the yoke. Am I being unfair to judge it on this?

1999 GSXR 750: 179Kg / 134HP

01/02 R6: 180kg / 118HP

Thanks in advance

R6 is a generation on from the SRAD, I'd take the R6 every single time.

Nothing wrong with the right way up forks on the R6 at all. The 600 SRAD came with them. Didn't stop the R6 monstering the Supersport classes.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not afraid of an older bike (current bike is 25 years old) I really want to know which will be more of a hoot. The power to weight seems to suggest the SRAD, on paper at least.

Depends what you mean by "fun"? Thrashing the knackers off of it and carving the corners then R6.

Looking fat = Buy a SRAD. Razz SRADs are typically more stable than the R6, but the engine is more torquey.

I wouldn't read too much into the weights. This was a time when manufacturers were pretty creative with that the term "dry weight" meant.

If you can find a good 750 SRAD I'd be more tempted by that 25% extra cc is a big difference and they are quite at home on the track just like the R6 but offer a fair bit more mid range than the R6 ......easier to wheelie too Wink

R6 of that era is prone to:

Bad ignition coils
Weak 2nd gear
Weak cylinder 1 liner

I would never buy another one.

Or K1/2 onwards 600 (K1 had mild steel exhausts so I'd go K2).

What's your budget?

R6's are known for gearbox and bore issues.

I would go for a K2 GSXR750.

Often described as a near perfect motorcycle.

the 750 is quite a leap in performance from a 400 (and for that matter a 600). Why the rush? 600 makes a great road bike. B1H would be my pick also.

fwiw - the Y model gsxr750 is known for chocolate gearbox issues.

Y and K1 is colour changes only, K2 had different mirrors and exhaust.

I'm sad, but not sad enough to know the different colour schemes (yet Laughing)

Indeed, the rear fairing is the give away to me Laughing They went more "plain" I think from K2. Removed the weird red swipe.

This alone and the fact ive seen too many of the early 5eb models suffer from it, will always put me off buying one.

01 R6 or SRAD 750.... hmm, it really depends on the availability of gearboxes as they are not the strongest on either models. Opt for a K1 750 or 02 R6 onwards and now you're talking.

The limiting factor is my budget is £2300 max, and that's considering the part ex/sale on my current bike.

Pretty interested, as long as it's green. PM'd

There's no rush at all, I like learning the ropes and mastering each cc class. Just the SRAD 600 looked like a worse 750, and I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

/////////////////////////////////

If anyone has any other suggestions on good race rep 600's for under £2300 I'm all ears. Thanks guys.
