So, my wallet was stolen. 2 debit cards, one credit card inside. Called the number on the website, got through to someone straight away. The guy on the end of the phone was asking me several searching questions and unsurprisingly, I couldn't answer them. I simply wanted them to cancel the cards.

He was miffed, I told him I was in 'no mood to be tested' and told him to confirm the cards are cancelled. He told me to call back later to order replacements, and I would need to 'pass security' to do so.

So I called back later when I was in a slightly less agitated mood. Again, searching questions. After confirming a direct debit and a monthly payment, he said "When did you last draw money from a cash machine?" to which I had no reply. I can't remember a detail like that at all, and asked him to ask me another question instead. At which point, I got told I hadn't passed security and he couldn't help me further. He told me I must go to my branch to confirm my identity. No mention of taking anything with me though.

If I could find you, 'Gary from Glasgow', I'd rip your fucking arm off and beat your head with it until you couldn't see straight.

Off to the branch tomorrow, will get a card ordered, then ditch the bank.

Is Nationwide generally accepted as being the lesser of the high street evils?

They are all shit. I went into Homo Sexual Bank Clarks the other day to order a replacement secure key. They said I needed to phone up to get an activation pin. The Indian on the phone who I could not understand told me to put the woman in the bank on, she could not even understand what the guy was saying Laughing. In the end she ended up getting her branch manager to do it Confused. My student account is with Santander and when I left in a kebab shop pissed they got me a new one sent out. But refused to send it to my uni accommodation and said it had to be sent to my registered home address. They are all out to make money and fleece us for all we have at the end of the day.

Thumbs Up

I'm sure you would be making a thread along the lines of 'someone phoned up my bank and took all my money because they didn't ask any questions to confirm who was phoning.'

Oops Laughing

Get arsey with them and they're obviously going to do the minimum they can for you. They'll play it by the book then, and if you didn't pass security, playing it by the book means politely telling you to do one. (I guarantee the call handler doesn't give a shit if you bank elsewhere).

You need to prove who you are to stop anyone from ringing up and cancelling your cards. If you're unable to do that on the phone then visiting the branch sounds good to me.

+1.

You could just have your internet banking page open when confirming all of the details like that.

I can sympathise. I got my cards stolen whilst I was abroad and when I rang up (Halifax) they asked me loads of questions like "how much was your last direct debit" and "who paid in the £50 pound 2 weeks ago etc. Virtually impossible to be correct without access to my statements - lots of stuff goes through these accounts.

I could understand if I was trying to change my address or withdraw money but I just wanted them cancelled!

In the end I got so many questions wrong that they put the cards on hold Rolling Eyes
Charged me a fortune for the calls too.

Think you're going to get the same at all banks tbh - and switching current accounts is just as much of a ball-ache!

Hang on. He was calling up to cancel cards. What possible angle of attack is there in that? At best, you could maliciously get someone else's cards temporarily cancelled.

I lost a debit card recently and called up HBOS. No security bollocks, the chap just determined who I (said that I) was, and the card was cancelled immediately and a new one ordered up. Boosh, done, exactly as it should be.

And I was just thinking about switching to Santander as well.

HSBC, well, do some Googling.

I can understand your frustration but what he did was right. With all the scams out these days, the protection of your data has to be tight. Otherwise no one would use that bank.

My last few conversations with Santander have ended very badly, so I can feel your pain. I only have a credit card with them, and if they didn't keep popping up with decent balance transfer deals, I would have binned it long ago.

I once rang them to ask them to set up a direct debit for the minimum payment on the credit card, to make sure I never missed a payment. So they promptly set it up to take the full balance. When I got my statement I rang them and told them to stop it. So on the direct debit date, they took the full balance. That prompted an angry email from me, an apology from them, and £40 knocked off my balance.

The next time I rang them, I wanted to change my address. The conversation went like this:
"I'd like to change my address on your records please."
"Sorry Sir, I'm afraid you have to go to a branch or use our online banking service for that."
"OK, where is my nearest branch?"
"Sorry Sir, there doesn't seem to be one in your county."
"Right, well can I have my online banking login details then, please?"
"Sorry Sir, we have to post those to you, and they'll go to your old address."
"Right, well I will have to travel and find a branch somewhere then, won't I?"
"Just before you go, Sir, could I ask if you are happy with the way we dealt with your enquiry today?"
Riiiiiiiiiight.

I will stick to First Direct, I think.

I'm with Barclays and failed security a few weeks ago, instead of saying that they cannot continue with the call they ran a credit check on me and asked me questions like:

Who out of the following have you lived with - the answer would be multiple choice names.

Who out of the following do you know - multiple choice answers again but with different names.

Etc, etc.

Was really rather clever and bloody handy IMO.

Roger - From how it reads, it sounds like they did indeed cancel the cards, but could not re-order them with him until he was able to pass security.

I agree with the post earlier, get your internet banking open when you talk to them and you can give them ALL the information they need to validate who you are.

I praised santander for a couple of weeks when I lost my debit card.

Asked a few questions which I obviously knew the answers to as I set them up...

He then asked some questions that you mentioned about last direct debit and withdrawal, which if I didn't have online banking to check, would have been difficult.

Card cancelled and new one sent out all within 5 minutes. Took 3 days to arrive and the pin came a day later Thumbs Up

Bank employee here, work in a call centre dealing with numpties like you day in day out.

1. If you come through to me telling me you're in no mood to be tested, guess what I'm going to do? Damn right.

2. To make a change on your account or even to give you any details about your account, you need to pass security. Until you do that, you're some crook who is phishing for information.

3. Of course you need to take some form of IDENTIFICATION with you to confirm your IDENTITY. Or do you expect the staff to just know everybody? Does your mum still tell you to wipe your arse after a shit? Common fucking sense.

Pretty much every single bank has telephone and online banking facilities now. IF YOU TAKE THE TIME to set these up and set up your security details, AND REMEMBER THEM 90% of your interaction with the bank will go smoothly.

If however, you're the retard who calls me to change his address or move money away from your account without even a fucking sort code to hand, you're gonna have a bad time.

Yes it's your money, and yes you should be able to move it whenever you like. But if you want it to stay your money, invest some of your fucking time in setting up some security.

And the threats of "I'm just gonna move all my accounts to HSBC/Santander/whatever the fuck else"... Crying or Very sad

/Rant

You can tell I love my customers can't you Rolling Eyes

Because that hadn't crossed my mind Laughing

I've got a BSc in Biomedical Science which currently seems like it's worth less than the piece of paper its written on. While I'm looking for a job that actually utilises this degree, I'm working in my little slice of hell.

Best of luck with that.
I've only been with Santander for about a year and have had loads of problems. When I pop into my branch to sort things out, invariably there is no-one available to speak to. The only option that I'm given is to use a phone to speak to the call centre in Jockland. The phone is situated in a very public area and I'm expected to go through all of the security bollocks in front of other customers. Due to dialect differences, I have to repeat my 'secret security answers' many times, all within earshot of strangers.
If anyone knows of a good bank for business accounts then please let me know as I reckon that I'll be ready to switch real soon.

I phoned capital one the other day to make some changes to my credit card account. Got through to an Indian call centre, they lady told me I have to go to my local branch to sort it. Ok I said, a quick look on Google promptly told me that guess what?....

They don't have any fucking branches In the UK!

Very Happy

I've withdrawn cash from a branch of Natwest (that I'd never been to before) when I didn't have my bank card or any ID. Mr. Green

I'm with Halifax - I tell them my birthday and my postcode and I can sleep with their wife if I want to. They've been very good to me and have on one occasion gone well beyond the "call of duty" so to speak. On another occasion, they changed my address without my permission (I think I made a thread about that here) and gave me £120 as a way of saying sorry!

I highly recommend them OP. Lloyds are owned by the same parents company I think - RBS?

I had to pay the train home and back again to collect it. I proved who I was so why should they care where I want it sending, I had proved who I was.
