Gate Locks

Putting a new wider gate in the garden for my bike and want to now have a lock put on which I can lock from the outside using a key when I go out on it. Any suggestions that would be weather proof?

Would rather not re-use an internal padlock on the outside but have heard that mortice locks and the like can rust in the weather.

Just a quick point, no point in locking the gate if its a lift pin one...

A latch? No its a new gate and not putting a latch on. Goin for a custom wide gate to go with my new concrete anchor 😃

He means the hinge - common design for gate hinges is a hinge that simply slots over a barrel. Problem with that is, there nothing to stop someone lifting it off again, making the lock at the other end irrelevant.

The one Ive found just moves a bolt across just like a pad bolt. you couldn't lift that gate up if the bolt is across ?

I've used a 5lever mortice lock designed for a back door on my Gate. I lube it with WD40 every so often and it's fine. I would also have at least one HD locking bolt on the back of the gate though, and if you want it to be secure, I'd position it lower down on the back of the gate, so you can't put your arm over the top of the gate to reach it if possible?

Never mind lifting the gate up, I've got a friend who went to get their bike out one day to find it missing, and a massive tyre mark going all the way up and over the 6ft fence, somehow the pikey gits had managed to lift the damn thing up and over. No idea how the hell they managed it, but they did

I've used something similar to this https://www.locksonline.co.uk/acatalog/CISA-42311-50-Gate-Lock.html It has quite a deep 'throw'; the bolt moves back once when unlocked and then a bit further once the handle is pulled.
I finished it off with a nice chrome handle similar to this https://www.doorhandlesdirect.co.uk/20/section.aspx/3159/19mm_round_bar_euro_door_handles_paa

Have one of the above and works fine. Fit with anti tamper screws to prevent it being taken off too easily.
