Tl;dr passed test(s), big bikes are fun, but couldn't live with one everyday (commuting through town etc.)
So yeah, left home @ 5am this morning, picked the Bandit up I was doing my test on & rode the 35-40 miles to the test centre. Along the way despite being cold and tired, the whole riding through the countryside on a big bike thing started to make sense, something that was missing 2 days earlier doing the same route on an ER5 (albeit restricted to 33bhp).
Mod 1; was expecting to fail on the slow maneuvers, as my practice goes were appalling, so bad the instructor wasn't even going to let me take the test until he saw my high speed stuff. On the day I managed ok, only got 1 minor as I wasn't fast enough on the avoidance first time round.
Mod 2; was pretty ecstatic about Mod 1 but had to compose myself as it was straight after. The road ride went alright, a few things the instructor didn't like, so I got 5 minors but he did say my cornering was lovely. For someone who's spent their entire time riding in the city, that was a nice compliment.
What I learned; big bikes are fun, (well not the er5) but the weight IS an issue at low speeds, at least for a weakling like me. A 3 day DAS was a bit of a stretch with a years experience on a 125, although my mate with much more experience was fine, but he passed with exactly the same amount of minors. Oh and motorways are really f**king windy, I hate them
Sorry for the essay, just really happy. Expect a what bike thread real soon... ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

Congrats!!! I was worried about the weight of a bigger bike too but also find that cornering and slow speed stuff feels a lot more sturdy on a bigger bike.

Congrats mate!
I failed my Mod2 last week, got it booked in again for the 18th, so we'll see what happen.
Enjoy the big bike love.. I hated getting onto my scooter this morning, would have been on a CBR had I passed!! ____________________ GSXR 600 K6 - Stolen

I'd love to rent a Bandit or something for a while, just think it's overkill for what I'd mainly use it for. Ideally I'd have a CRF250M for commuting, then something bigger for sunny days. Not really practical ATM having multiple bikes, although I see now why people do. ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

It's all in the hips, or so my friend tells me. She's like 5'2" and 100 pounds. And she rides a Blade and a GS Adventure (albeit with a lower seat)!
Now I've sat on a normal seat GS Adventure and I was on tiptoes and I was scared as I was taking it off the side stand as it felt so heavy. But once you're upright it's ok as long as you get your foot on the floor early when you stop, once the bike starts to go I can't see many people being able to stop it.
Anyway back to what she said, was during slow riding, slip the clutch and use throttle with rear brake to balance the power, then get your hips on the inside of the turn to counterbalance the bike as you steer, don't look where you're going... look where you want to go (but don't look down, look up at where you want to go) and the bike will follow, and she said its easy after a little practice. |
