You see helmets manufactureres say are made of thermoplastic, what exactly does that mean though?

Moulded to shape via the medium of heat?

Inb4 unhelpful wall of text from teffers.

A thermoplastic, or thermosoftening plastic, is a polymer that becomes pliable or moldable above a specific temperature, and returns to a solid state upon cooling

Yes, fellas, but, what type of plastic are these helmets made from. I ask because im interested in what kind of paints and coatings are safe to use on helmets.

In terms of helmets, thermoplastic means "not a composite". Thumbs Up

We teach that the cheaper end of the spectrum of helmets, thermoplastic etc are not designed to be painted or have stickers on them. Fibreglass ones you can paint and put stickers on.

Apparently some paints and resins can react with the plastic composite.

Thermoplastics are able to be re-heated and re-moulded.

Thermo-set plastics can be formed once and once only. The only state change you can then achieve from heat is chemical breakdown (The plastic burns/blisters).

As for the type of plastic I couldnt tell you. I'd imagine some companies use one type and others use another type. Most major properties will be similar.

I didnt look on wikipedia because I thought "thermoplastic" was just some science sounding bolloks thought up by marketing so they didnt have to say "cheapoplastic" Smile

Actually, I reckon you aren't far from the truth there, I've always taken thermoplastic to be a modern euphemism for polycarbonate, which is what plastic lids were made of in my day.

Poly lids had a bit of a stigma attached to them, not helped by the fact that they nearly always had a very clear seam down the middle, where the two halves of the moulds were fused.

I've always assumed they changed the name to get away from the cheap, shitty rep that poly had.

This Thumbs Up

A lot of plastic used in impact resistant products are usually made from ‘Bisphenol A’ polycarbonate which is very tough (used in Riot Shields).

However, stick something like Acetone (nail polish remover and found in paints) on it and it becomes very brittle instantly.

Back in the 80s, when I was a bike instructor specialising in safety equipment, I did an experiment involving GRP and polycarbonate lids.

I got two of each (all equally well used) and did an all over design on one of them, using ordinary vinyl striping tape, which is the stuff they make stickers out of and has some kind of solvent in the adhesive.

Having done that, I left them for a week, then attacked them with a normal weight hammer, in front of the class.

The GRP helmets both behaved the same way, they took repeated hits and it took real effort to penetrate the shell.

The poly lids both broke first hit, the plain one along the seam I mentioned earlier, the striped one just shattered.

I also should point out that the received wisdom of the time, was that poly also deteriorated when exposed to UV light.

I appreciate that materials and manufacturing processes may have changed since then, but I still wouldn't put stickers on a plastic lid.

Also likely to not be petrol proof.

All the best

Well it's obviously a good thing that rioters can't into materials science.... Rolling Eyes

I thought most plastics, including those used in helmets/knee sliders/boots & gloves etc were a composite. because they were formed with two or more different materials with differing properties. (Might be wrong, any chemists care to correct or clarify?)
