Screen trimming

I've just bought a large Givi screen for my bike but it catches on the (non-OEM) handguards on full lock and it's tricky to put the steering lock on.

I'm planning on just cutting some small cut-outs from the screen - is there a recommended tool for doing this?

I was planning to use a basic electric jigsaw but I'm worried about cracking the plastic, or will that be ok?

Heat it, push bars into it, let it cool.

jigsaws can be lairy little fuckers so prob best not to.

Heating the screen is a tricky one too as you dont want to risk burning or distortion outside of the immediate area.

if it was something I really had to do, I'd be looking at a junior hacksaw and a steady approach...

Depends how much needs to come off.
I'd just resort to a file and elbow grease to try and prevent cracking the perspex.

Post up a picture, there may be an alternative solution.

I would use a tile saw.

Looks like a coping saw but with a sharp wire instead of a conventional blade.

Mini-grinder and a worn grinding dosc or flapwheel. I am doing one this evening, cutting up a 'busa screen to make a small screen for my Bandit.

I need to take about 5-10mm of the top edge of those wings...I haven't got the other tools, so I'll try the hacksaw....

Can't you just slacken the bar clamps and swing the bars back a little for more lock? You might find it more comfortable to ride too now you have a screen.

Hacksaw and file to finish is fine. Tile saw sounds great, but you're unlikely to have one lying around.

No to a jigsaw. It melts the perspex which then reseals behind the blade, so you have to chase it with another saw anyway to actually separate the piece, and then clean up all the blobs with a file. There is some danger of snapping it if it catches.

dremel with a cutting disk

i always tend to snap the disks when ever i use mine though, so might be worth wearing safety bins

From experience (and also confirmed by comments above) I'd be careful of any cutting that heats and melts the perspex. Especially if you're just nibbling a little bit off (it's sort of ok if you're careful for cutting large sheet).

So power tools would be too aggressive imo. Hacksaw would do, depends on size being cut.

I would attempt to file it down rather than take chunks out of it.
Yes it would take a lot of work, but at least you can make it identical on each side and now worry about putting to much force into the Perspex and snapping it Thumbs Down

Corse sand paper for the bulk of it, then some wet & dry to polish the edges and make it smooth again.
But that's me Rolling Eyes
