|
So.......
I failed mod 1
Was wet, of course it was wet
All went to plan-ish, I nearly missed the speedtrap I was over eager but realised last minute 😳😁
Then emergency controlled stop I put everything I've been told out the back window and skidded. Did I release it? Did I fuck.....😳
Turned bike around.
"Please make your way to the exit gate and wait for me there"
BALLS.
"Wait for me inside"
Great.
"I'm sure you have noticed we didn't complete the test?"
Yep.
Why didn't I just PRETEND? Even press gently? God knows, cause you wanted to keep being a noob? Probably.
Other highlights were that I didn't do a proper lifesaver on U-Turn, fair do's. Tho I did my obs when I started manouvre, I didn't check, more a turn of head to facilitate the turn.
So all in all yes I have failed, not the end of the world. Booking in next week. I now know what's coming and what to do. Where I can improve on and course layout etc.

I would of been tempted to ask him how he got his licence.
Good chance he'd never had any formal training for his, either.
Wasn't until DAS was introduced in the mid 90's that many bothered with anything other than CBT; either because of cost, or fact that until DAS came along CBT was often the only training on offer! And even then, up till last year, when testing on a tiddler got you a restricted licence that matured, half the candidates DSA tested had little or no formal training beyond CBT.
However; its endemic; popular opinion is there's no point in A1... but there is, and you see it, and are making it work for you, and for £15 you just had a very cheap lesson. Job done. Well done. Better luck next time; chalk this one up to nerves. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I'm a firm believer in Teff's seminal classic "time on a tiddler" and when I got into this biking malarky was well up for just pootling around on my 125 forever. However three years in to that and with just 6 months left on my 33bhp licence I'm now itching to jump on to someting bigger (or maybe just something different?!).
Course I'll keep my 125 for the economic miles and the lulz but if I could have afforded it at the time, looking back I reckon I would have jumped on DAS.
Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll kick the arse off Mod1 the next time ____________________ Story so far: RV125 VanVan > SV650 > Indian Scout > Triumph Thruxton, SV650 (again) & CG125 |

Unlucky, it's all a learning curve, you'll get it next time. I take it you've practiced them on a quiet road somewhere?

I've seen what's to come, what is required, I was comfortable with it just screwed up the braking mostly. I have about 2000 miles under my belt, I feel confident enough, is it a case of getting some training on a big bike then taking the A test on that then? |
You are going to move upwards and onwards. That is pretty much a given. To do that, you will more than like HAVE to do a DAS course; so lets assume thats also a given.
But here and now; you have a 125. You have your Thoery/Hazard in the bag, or you wouldn't have been able to do Mod 1. BUT thats only valid 2 years or until you get a bike-licence.
And you are less than £100 away from getting your A1.
DO IT. Stop provaricating. Dont let doubts nag at you. Indecission is the WORST decission. Stop Thinking - Start riding. Just DO.
Get the A1 in the bag. You have set about it and are part way there. Keep going. Day you have the paper in your pocket? You can sign up for a DAS course, if you want; you will be barely any money out of pocket for having done the A1, BUT, you will KNOW you can DO IT!
Stall now, provaricate over doing DAS, check out some schools, rather than re-booking Mods for A1, all delays, and time ebbing away on your CBT and Theory/Haz. Have to scrape together the cash. More delay. More time of your current certs. And THEN when you get to DAS, you are under pressure; you have a lot of money riding on it; you have the remaining time on certs riding on it; and you still dont know whether you are up to it, and you dont come accross as the most assertive of folk, so you will be pushing a BIGH bow wave of worry ahead of you, if you try switching horses mid-race.
It CAN be done, it WILL be done, but, here and now; finish what you started; do the confidence building and gaining good technique on bike that demands it from you... then, NO PRESSURE, and JUST for the fucking FUN... you can go do DAS, if you want, when you want, and it DONT have all the strings and weights attached.
You'll be better prepared for it; mentally and skill wise, and you will be able to ENJOY doing it, rather than fretting about it.
And you can enjoy the here and now. Its not all you might want or hope for, its a stepping stone; least risk, least outlay, least cost, and least pressure. Doesn't matter THAT much, if you dont succeed, or if it takes more than a couple of goes at it all...
How much did failing this Mod 1 cost you? £15 test fee; couple of quid petrol and an hour or so of your time.
How much would it have cost if this little mind-fart fuck up had happened on a DAS course? £30 for school booked Mod slot; £150 for Accompanied lesson and bike hire. THAT would have been a kick in the wallet. Even MORE so if you had back-to-back Mods booked and failing Mod 1 cost you cancellation of a Mod 2!
So better failing A1's and writing of little money to experience, and calling it 'fun' and 'learning' than ramping the stakes just to do it all in a oner, and putting yourself under greater pressure with even more chance of nerves causing mind-fart fuck-ups.
Carry on; see it through; don't hang extra crap you really dont need on it all, or stall in a mire of dilemah, deliberation and indecission.
What comes next, comes next. Do this first.
That's my opinion, at any rate.
And if your 125 has a drum back brake.... next MOD 1.... pull up round the corner from the test centre, wind the adjuster back to slack it off before you actually present for test ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I think you did well to get up to the emergency stop, although you would have failed on the u-turn, they want a separate life-saver before initiating the turn.
Only you can say whether it's worth going for your test(s) again. If you think you can learn more from re-doing your mod 1 then do so, but I'd suggest you've pretty much experienced the brilliant waste of time test.
Honestly had I not of experienced big bikes during my DAS, I'd probably have got a 250, but once you get a taste of the power you want more Glad the new laws are working tho, encouraging people to get 600's ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)
