Congratulations on getting broken bit out.

I think I'll order original replacement for mine.

Are you going to speak to M&P about it?

It's not a tapered thread is it where the bolt gradually gets bigger and thus a tighter fit as it goes in?

I sheared the temp sensor bolt on my first car as I didn't realise it was a tapered thread

I wonder, what would have happened to your sump if you'd gone for another 1/4 turn and it hadn't snapped? Thinking

I went for that 1/4 turn (and more) a while back with one of those, it did a great job of smoothing out the hole in the strainer cap.

I managed well for 6 months or so, with the old plug upside-down in the hole with sealant to keep it oilproof. It probably doesn't make my street cred any better though.

Now happily helicoiled and with a non magnetic bolt, put in by a professional Laughing

I bought one of these [can't remember the exact seller] a while back - avoided using it in the end as the threaded bit was significantly shorter than the stock bolts when I got it out during the oil change. Maybe its not a problem, but it didn't seem like it would be quite as secure to me Confused

The magnetic hollow pos was £6.50 from m_and_p on ebay.

Of course they're hollow, that's how they stick the magnet to the bolt. The good ones are longer so the hollow bit passes through the case before it gets tight

The idea is that whilst being run your engine is subject to wear, so tiny bits of metal end up in the oil (hopefully caught by the oil filter). The magnetic sump plug attracts any bits that make it into the sump, keeping them out of circulation and allowing you to get rid of them by wiping the plug when you empty the oil out.

A decent oil filter and regular changes should be good enough.

Why not just buy a Neodymium magnet (or a stack of 'em) from eBay and stick one on top of your stock steel plug? It's not going to leap off into the sump.

Or, indeed, just whack one on the bottom of the sump. You get to be seen by inductive loop sensors in the road too, for free.

You did right; it is a big problem when torqued or done up by hand to what used to be the right spec.
Being shorter ;it strips the sump threads.

That just looks like a cheapo shit magnet that's been Araldite'd to the end of a cheapo shit bolt.

Got one myself from WeMoto and didn't have any real issues. It was a little shorter than the standard one, but so far, no leak.
