Hi,

Just looking for some advice on whether a new visor for my HJC. Is t the case that only the clear and light tint are road legal because they are the only ones with the EC rating?

I cant really see the point in the light tint as I don't think it will do anything. I want a new visor so I don't have to wear sunglasses.

The HJC legal tint visors are useless. Get the dark tint, much better, and you'll be very unlucky to be pulled for that alone, unless dumb enough to wear it at night Thumbs Up

Technically it's only an issue in poor visibility weather / at night

If you've got a clear visor that you can carry with you then you should be able to get out of having been pulled over

*not legal advice

I ride with a black tinted visor in the day and always have my clear visor in my bag.
Luckily it's a 10 second job with my helmet to switch the visors over, so if it gets dark and i'm riding i'll pull over and switch visors or put my clear visor on before I set off if I know it's going to get dark while i'm out.

In the 21months I've been on the road, I've never been pulled over because of my visor or had police comment about my visor when i've been pulled for what ever reason.

Technically it is an issue any and every time you use a tint greater than 50% when riding (or pillioning) a bike on the road.

Practically and pragmatically you are vanishingly unlikely to get any grief for it unless you take the piss (wear it when visibility is reduced). That said, if you get caught doing something else, they might just add it to the rap sheet.

I wore a light tint visor all last summer and found that it worked well enough on fully sunny days and was still perfectly usable on dull days or evenings. I had the clear visor with me, but never put it on from about May through September/October.

Full iridium (is that even a word?)

Gone past many a police car and had policeman walking past at bike meets with it on and never been in trouble.

Not impossible but unlikely they know/care even more so if you only use it during the day time.

However it was not fun this morning with all the fog Confused Had to have my visor up.

All of my helmets have this feature. Sadly the HJC dropdown tint is next to useless. The Shuberth one though, ooh tinted lovelyness.

Hmmm, thought it was 30% ?

I also found HJC drop down sun visors not great - but certainly better than no tint at all, especially when riding into low winter sun. I do miss the convenience of it, but still prefer a proper dark tint, and carry the clear if likely to need it.

HJC now do the RPHA ST, with a drop down sun visor. Unfortunately, it seems to be even less tinted than that on the IS-17 (was my perception anyway), and the mechanism for it feels a bit cheap, reminds me of some of the Box ones.

It seems they have had to alter the shell shape to accommodate it too, and as I've just discovered that I get next to no wind buffeting with the standard RPHA (possibly a combination of factors - my profile on the bike, screen height and shape, plus helmet shape) I'm loathe to change helmets again anyway. Plus, the weight has obviously increased, and by a noticeable amount.

Pillioning? Is that even a word? Laughing

Seriously - What could you be done for if your pillion had a dark tint visor?

Nothing. They're the one committing the offence.

The usual reminder: you're more likely to be mashed up on your bike than tugged, prosecuted and conviced for wearing a dark visor. Reset your risk assessment.

I'd buy and use the dark tint if you haven't got one with an internal flip down [personally don't like those for riding with the main visor up but seems i'm the exception in that respect].

Been using a full tint almost the entire time [except night and bad weather of course] for nearly 7 years now and never had a single mention, even when pulled/accident wearing it.

The light tint ones personally i'd avoid - they do stop the really bad glare from utterly blinding you, but its still damn uncomfortable with the sun head on and you'll likely be squinting a bit I expect. Plus your eyes can be seen through it, so you can't look at attractive scenery without being noticedShifty

But it is an offence for a pillion to use a dark visor? Somebody explain that one to me?

Guess its because the helmet laws [having an appropriate visor etc] apply to all helmets worn on the road and its a legal requirement for pillions to wear them just as it is for the rider.

Rather than them considering it in terms of ''but the pillion doesn't need to see they're not in control''.

Only ever used full tint visors, never been pulled (for that) or had an issue with it

It is a nightmare if you get caught out and come home in the dark, you cannot see shit all but it's much better in daylight

My helmet doesn't have a quick release visor so it's a pain to change. If I had quick release I'd just carry a clear one and swap it when needed

My iridium stays on day and night with no plod attention or kittens killed.
It really doesn't seem to dark at night but then I use well lit roads.
