PostPosted: 22:59 - 01 Apr 2014    Post subject: taxing bike without mot certificate Reply with quote

Hi Guys,

I have received my bike and two questions,

no tax but moted yesterday . The sales man forgot to bring the mot certificate, if I insure it and tax the v5 slip which is given to the buyer, can I tax it without mot ?

the cheapest quote on MCE was £280 with £1000 excess or £500 with £400 excess, which would you go for ? The quote was for third party fire and theft . obviously there is a big risk with the 1k in case , I have an accident as I will be paying out a lot but again with the 400, i will be paying 200 extra as insurance so I save £400 if I had an accident in the future.

Overall think should go with MCE but happy to hear your thoughts.

Also I will ride the bike to work after insuring it tonight . would I get pulled over for not having tax even if I am on my way to post office ?

Well excess doesn't usually apply to a third party claim, just the fire and theft part.

Have you tried other websites for insurance? I've found tesco compare and compare the market give the most competitive rates atm due to the schemes they have with various insurers. Obviously this varies from person to person but I'd suggest it's a good place to start.

Also, afaik you still need an MOT cert for tax at the post office but an MOT centre should be able to print one out for you for a small fee, or free if you know them.

No tax on the road = bike taken.

Are you actually retarded as you post a lot of shit when its all here ready to read.

Just buy it online and ask guy to forward disc on.

You'll need proof of mot to tax the bike, you can print this off the Internet, although not sure if the post office will accept it but worth a try. Other option is to tax online as it will be motd on the system, but obviously will take a day or so for the disc to arrive but you won't get pulled. Haven't had a tax disc on my bike for about 3 years

As far as insurance go, I take whatever had the lowest premium. The way I look at it is, on the off chance I have an at fault accident, i'll pay for it then. I'd rather not pay for it before hand and probably won't have an accident. If that makes sense ?

Although £1000 excess sounds high, checked all comparison sights? Checked companies not on comparison too? They tend to be cheaper

no mate, I am not retarded. I bought it from dealer not private so do not have the details of the previous owner to contact him.

The dealer just said, he will post it to me but suggested I could just go to post office with it but when checking post office website they do need the mot certificate so hence why I asked.

I thought maybe something has changed recently

You can tax your bike online and if I remember correctly I didn't need my MOT certificate to hand to do this, I could be wrong though.

I can't believe you don't understand what excess is or when you're required to pay it…

With your insurance excess, you wouldn't pay that excess fee if you crashed, you'd only pay that excess fee if YOU claimed off your insurance if your bike got stolen or set on fire.
If you have a crash and your insured third part fire and theft your insurance will fix the third parties car (who ever you crashed into) and not repair your bike, unless it was there fault, then you would claim off their insurance and their insurance would pay for your repairs and you would not pay anything to there insurers or your insurer (although your insurance may rise, even if it's not your fault).

Third Party Only = This type of cover only covers people who you crash into if it's your fault, nothing else. So you crash into someone, it's your fault, THEY claim off YOUR insurance. There's no possibility of you claiming off your own insurance when TPO as you're not covered for theft or fully comp'.

Third Party, Fire and Theft = The same as third party only but this time YOU are able to claim if your bike is stolen or is involved in a fire. Because YOU will be claiming off the insurance, YOU are responsible to pay an excess fee in order to claim.

Full Comprehensive = If you have a crash and it is your fault, YOU can claim off your insurance and have your vehicle repaired/paid out off, even if it's your fault, you can also claim if your vehicle is stolen or goes up in flames.

So.. to conclude if you insurer your bike third party, fire and theft and the excess is higher than the value of your bike, you may as well insure your bike third party unless TPFT is cheaper and just never claim.

To answer your question, I'd go for the £500 MCE cover with £400 excess but if my bike was worth well over £1k and I didn't mind losing £1k off it's value if it was stolen, i'd pick the £280 per year and invest in the best anti-theft products available to me.

According to the post office website, you still need to produce an MOT cert when you tax your vehicle, but no mention of insurance (although you always used to have to)

According to motoring.gov.uk you can get a new MOT cert from MOT garage but there is a fee associated with it...

You need the reference no off the V5C which I am pretty sure is also on the new keepers slip

I didn't require anything but the new owners slip to get tax for my bike just over a week ago... she didn't even want to see my insurance or mot slips.

she just kept saying something like "not our problem any more if you don't have insurance or mot" even after shoving the insurance cover letter in her face saying "but i am insured, do you not want to see this?" and her responding with the same thing basically...

Question confusing...

Funnily enough my tax disc & holder went missing a few days later... cunts must have nicked it lol... that reminds me I need to get a V20 form Neutral

MCE do an XS protect insurance.

Call them and they will explain. It covers your excess if the bike was stolen or fire balled.

As you will be TPFT then excess is only required if the above happens.

It would surprise me if you managed to tax it at the post office without the MOT certificate (well that rubbish bit of paper they give you now) and your insurance certificate. But maybe times have changed???

He said he is happy to pass on the tax.

Go online with the new keeper slip and use the doc ref on that. Order the tax, pick up from dealer.

the doc ref is in the name of the previous owner so would still get sent to him. Also the dealer is 70 miles away from me so rather just pay for duplicate than going all the way, even if the tax would have been sent to him.

When you sell a bike, you fill in the dealer section, does that mean DVLA will contact the dealer rather than the registered owner on the V5 ?

anyways, going to post office in a bit and will post back. hopefully I should be fine.

MOT is all online now. The certificate you get is really just a receipt, just a printed piece of paper, not one of the old certificates.

So best to tax online if you have insurance. It checks the MID and the MOT database (or used to, things change). You just need the V5 for the reference number iirc.

that is if AskMid is up to date, I am still showing as not insured yet after a heated call to Bennetts they say i am and to carry my certificate as proof until it does show up,

So if they used the site and it wasnt up to date would you get your tax ?

did tax it today and there was no request for insurance or mot certificate . When I asked why , the guy said it shows it all online so there is no need for paper evidence any more

hope this helps.

I am waiting to get tax disc holder, in the meantime if I carry it in my bag and if pulled over show it, would I get fine/notice for not having it on the bike ?

Carry it if you want.

Who buys a bike from a dealer without the paperwork ? it may not have had an mot at all...

Sounds like a very shoddy dealer...Now they have the cash i doubt they will go to the trouble of chasing it up and sending it.

he was a genuine dealer. he moted the bike on Monday so that it had 1 year mot although the previous mot had 50 days left.

He just forgot to give it to me as he mentioned. it was left in his van.

I checked it online and it all adds up
