 Posted: 16:04 - 03 Apr 2014 Post subject: Varadero XL 125V engine popping |
 |
|
Just had an urgent text from my lad.
He tried starting his Varadero (he push starts it, knackered starter motor). There was a pop from the exhaust, engine started then died.
Tried again, same pop but appears to have it running.
He's trying to get up to York to work atm so that's all the info I have.
I realise it could be a multitude of stuff.
BTW this is the same bike that maybe had an oil issue (cloudy sight glass). Not sure if related but thinking gasket/seal issue? Just don't want to go off in totally wrong direction. Like to eliminate the simple/stupid stuff first.
Any pointers appreciated. Thanks ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I don't like doing diagnosis by voodoo.... BUT.... exhaust.
Holed header, rotted balence pipe or collector.
Lack of back-pressure, causes the motor to run lean, cos charge escapes down the exhaust on the valve over-lap.
That's when you get coughing and spitting from the pipe.
On start up, short fill in the pot makes starting hard; and when motor does catch.... there's a chunk of unburned charge in the pipe, to get set on fire by hot exhaust when it its it.
And that Vera, I seem to recall is just the right age, for the collector to have rotted. And that that pipe on that bike is a bit of a rot-trap waiting to happen.
Wont lay money on it, and wont say dont do propper logical diagnostics; BUT I would say start by inspecting the exhaust carefully, especially collector.
Awful lot of presumed carburation faults aren't, but are caused in the exhaust. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Not really, symptoms do suggest carburation issue, as said; just most people do jump straight to looking at the carb, and overlook the pipe.

I started 'fettling' the 750 for an MOT...... BAD move.
What started as a bit of spot polish and grease job, has become a ground up bludy renovation, as I case all those little things that need tidying, sorting, cleaning, greasing or painting, that become apparent as you get further and further into it.
Bike that was, just ten days ago, perfectly rideable, and in fact started on the button, with a fresh battery and ridden around the garden... now a heap of bits on the bench... and an engine, now with a sheared mounting bolt stuck in the cases... loose in the frame, and refusing to budge!
HOW THE FUCK did they get the bastard IN there?!
Sump sits between the lower frame rails. So its got to come up to come out, but lift, twist, tilt, turn, as I may, it just doesn't seem to 'fit'?!?! and its bludy heavy!
So I'm in a pique.
Meanwhile Snowie is looking at bikes on e-bay.... and batting her eye-lashes at me.
"OY! I cant afford a new bludy motorbike, and am up to my sodding ears in semi-synth! Trying to sort the one I have. While you have perfectly good little bike, coming up to its fourth MOT after three years of service, with ner a spanner tickling needed between any of them; sat with tax, test and insurance, and a full tank of fuel, you could jump on and go anywhere on. Like RIGHT NOW, is a good time to try and ask me to buy YOU a new toy!"
So it looks like I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight, an all!
Not sure how that happens. Its MY house! My BED! She has her OWN home... but I end up on the couch?!?!?!?
Tits and tyres. Tits and Tyres.
Other than that.... not bad, thanks, yourself ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
