PostPosted: 16:04 - 03 Apr 2014    Post subject: Varadero XL 125V engine popping Reply with quote

Just had an urgent text from my lad.
He tried starting his Varadero (he push starts it, knackered starter motor). There was a pop from the exhaust, engine started then died.

Tried again, same pop but appears to have it running.

He's trying to get up to York to work atm so that's all the info I have.
I realise it could be a multitude of stuff.

BTW this is the same bike that maybe had an oil issue (cloudy sight glass). Not sure if related but thinking gasket/seal issue? Just don't want to go off in totally wrong direction. Like to eliminate the simple/stupid stuff first.

Any pointers appreciated. Thanks Thumbs Up

popping sounds like too much fuel getting to the plugs. Carb issue would be my first guess, but stand to be corrected

Thanks for the reply.
I'll pass it on. I'll see tonight if/when he gets back if both cylinders are working too.

Only thing is I had an old CG125 which started to backfire. Bike shop replaced reg/rec and issue sorted. Still can't work that one out myself.

Thumbs Up

I don't like doing diagnosis by voodoo.... BUT.... exhaust.
Holed header, rotted balence pipe or collector.
Lack of back-pressure, causes the motor to run lean, cos charge escapes down the exhaust on the valve over-lap.
That's when you get coughing and spitting from the pipe.
On start up, short fill in the pot makes starting hard; and when motor does catch.... there's a chunk of unburned charge in the pipe, to get set on fire by hot exhaust when it its it.
And that Vera, I seem to recall is just the right age, for the collector to have rotted. And that that pipe on that bike is a bit of a rot-trap waiting to happen.
Wont lay money on it, and wont say dont do propper logical diagnostics; BUT I would say start by inspecting the exhaust carefully, especially collector.
Awful lot of presumed carburation faults aren't, but are caused in the exhaust.

CG has self exited ignition; charging circuit and ignition circuit are entirely independent. Absolutley NO way replacing the rectifier ought to have fixed an ignition fault, except perhaps the coil shares earthing point with the rectifier and disturbing rectifier cleaned earth contact for the coil!
CDi unit? That might have fixed an ignition fault.
On the small-honda self exited CDi ignition, the CDi is actually a rectifier as well, for the ignition circuit. think its a seven pin unit?
There's a seperate winding in the generator to make electric to power up the ignition, plus the inductor coil to send sparking signal to the CDI. So CDi first has to rectify the AC current from the supply winding, to energise the coil with low tension DC volts,; then takes the trigger signal from the inductor to cause the field collapse on the coil that makes the HT current that makes the spark.
JUST for accademic interest.

Not really, symptoms do suggest carburation issue, as said; just most people do jump straight to looking at the carb, and overlook the pipe.

I'm pissed off and in pain, if you are asking!
I started 'fettling' the 750 for an MOT...... BAD move.
What started as a bit of spot polish and grease job, has become a ground up bludy renovation, as I case all those little things that need tidying, sorting, cleaning, greasing or painting, that become apparent as you get further and further into it.
Bike that was, just ten days ago, perfectly rideable, and in fact started on the button, with a fresh battery and ridden around the garden... now a heap of bits on the bench... and an engine, now with a sheared mounting bolt stuck in the cases... loose in the frame, and refusing to budge!
HOW THE FUCK did they get the bastard IN there?!
Sump sits between the lower frame rails. So its got to come up to come out, but lift, twist, tilt, turn, as I may, it just doesn't seem to 'fit'?!?! and its bludy heavy!
So I'm in a pique.
Meanwhile Snowie is looking at bikes on e-bay.... and batting her eye-lashes at me.
"OY! I cant afford a new bludy motorbike, and am up to my sodding ears in semi-synth! Trying to sort the one I have. While you have perfectly good little bike, coming up to its fourth MOT after three years of service, with ner a spanner tickling needed between any of them; sat with tax, test and insurance, and a full tank of fuel, you could jump on and go anywhere on. Like RIGHT NOW, is a good time to try and ask me to buy YOU a new toy!"
So it looks like I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight, an all!
Not sure how that happens. Its MY house! My BED! She has her OWN home... but I end up on the couch?!?!?!?
Tits and tyres. Tits and Tyres.
Other than that.... not bad, thanks, yourself Laughing

I spotted that. Just too jelouse to aknowledge it.
When I was at uni, one of the techies had naked, 76, GL1000, and I though then what a gorgeose bike it was and stuck it on the 'dream garage' list. So NOT talking about it.... no....

OK, is it thou or eleven?

Already sick.
Think my lunch just made a bid for freedom as I strained that effing engine out!
GOOD GOD! It 'rolls' out over the right hand frame rail, onto its side Shocked
But its OUT!
We can go back to talking Tiddler Twins now.

I wouldn't be refering to Snowie's assets like that, hope the couch is comfortable Wink

Anyhow, quick update on the XL125V popping.
Issue appeared to sort itself last night. No problem starting up and riding back from York.

So best I can see is keep a watching brief and best I can guess atm possibly put it down to some crud in the carb causing sticking/over fuel issue.

Thanks for the replies, will update if reoccurs Thumbs Up
