Hi all

I'm considering getting a black bike with matt finish or a mixture of matt and gloss.

My current bike has a matt finish on the grab rails and I've noticed that it's starting to flake off. I'm not too concerned on the 125 but wouldn't want to fork out thousands on a bike that's going to look pants in a few months time.

Unfortunately I can't garage my bike (I wish I could) but I do plan to get a cover for it. Will this help?

Is the paintwork likely to flake - does anyone have any experience of this?

If it does flake, is it easy to rectify and how?

Cheers Smile

I was under the impression that matt finish paintwork was tricky to keep clean, and required special cleaners etc. I think the problem is that you can inadvertently polish the paintwork and lose the matt effect. Maybe that's what's causing your current paintwork to degrade?

https://www.carcaremagazine.com/blog/2012/11/08/caring-for-matte-finish-cars/ Not sure how true this is, but sounds legit Smile

I'm ashamed to say that I've not cleaned my 125 since I bought it back in January. The new bike will be treated like a Queen though. . .I just need to make sure I get it right. Or not bother with the Matt if it's a bitch to preserve!

Thanks for the link - will have a look!

I heard from someone who had a matt black Harley that keeping it looking good was so much bother he was planning to chop it in and get a glossy one.

Amusing really as many people buy the matt finish thinking easy to look after and won't show the muck.

I'm beginning to think it's a slippery slope for my matt dream.

I have to be realsitic and practical about it though and don't want to create problems for myself.

You're going to buy a matte black bike?

I have a feeling you're looking at a Victory?

I've not had a matt bike but I've had a couple of matt black helmets.

The first one was sort of rubbery and was ace, it seemed to repel virtually all damage and cleaned really easily.

The second one was the same make but they changed the paint. It chips and scratches if you look at it the wrong way and gets 'shiny bits' all over it really easily.

Don't think I'd be in a rush to risk a matt paintjob on the bike. You can't t-cut out the scuffs for a start. Laughing

Haha, okay, thanks guys, I think my mind is made up. Unless of course the bike I want comes only in the matt option.

It's a CBR600RR I'm looking at - or potentially a GSX600R. They're the only two bikes I can touch the ground on. I was also looking at a Daytona 675 but that's really on tippy toes and the R6 - forget it!

I heard you can lower bikes but if a Supersports is manufactured to ultimate performance, surely the act of lowering it will fuck up all the finely tuned engineering that created the performance standard in the first place?! Hence my pitiful short-list of. . . . two.

Although seriously, matt, unless it's just a show bike, is a bad idea for a bike that's actually used.

I've said it before and I will say it again... Daytona LadyStar / MStar boots.

I'll have to get something like that anyway, just for the added reassurance that I can balance the bike. The boots report to add approx 1.5". The R6 had me swinging my legs in the air with at least 10cm gap to fill. I don't think even nabbing a pair of Gary Glitter's finest would help me there!

Must depend on the year of the R6, I've never found them particularly worse than the others, in fact I'd say the CBR600 felt like the worst one to me. Confused

675's tall but a bit skinnier than the fours so easier to shuffle over on. Was always a tiptoes job though.

What about the GSXR? My thousand is a teeny little thing, I still wear the boots but it's proper flat foot territory for me. Can't see why the 600 would be physically larger (I'm talking k5/k6 1000, so that would be the k7 600 I think?)

The GSXR is on my list along with the CBR. I have a Honda now and find it really comfortable and it felt similar when sitting on the 600 so it made the list. You're right, the 675 has a narrow seat but I'm not really comfortable with the idea of shifting my bum to get a footing.

How tall are you, Bendy? I'm 159cm but have relatively long legs - yet I do seem to struggle.

A sports bike lowered at each end will run out of ground clearance a little quicker.
It'll still handle a load better than a GSX600F and probably still have better ground clearance too.

I'm about 165cm but I've got stumpy legs, 28 inch inside leg. So I've generally had to shuffle across a bit (it really isn't hard) on most bikes. Bought the boots when I got a Sprint ST and couldn't reverse it. Laughing

The gixer is the first one I've ever had where I can flat foot it both sides (admittedly with the boots on), it really is quite small.

Get comfortable with it - I'm 6ft and still have to do so on my KTM 690 when it doesn't have luggage on. Not a problem and something you quickly get used to.

I just don't want to run the risk, G. Edit/ on the loweringside of things. In terms of learning to get comfortable with shifting, I'll considering it when I have a few years/miles biking under my belt - I don't want to be an accident waiting to happen Smile

I believe my inner leg is around 30-31" which is quite long for my overall height. I might buy the boots sooner rather than later!

Sabs, I've always wondered who Bill Payer is?!

I wanted Matt Grey on the ZX6R but ended up going for Satin instead - easier to clean etc.
