PostPosted: 20:12 - 03 Apr 2014    Post subject: Baffles and cans Reply with quote

I am wondering if anyone can help me out with some advice. I have just taken delivery of my first big bike bandit 600.
The chap who had it before me has fitted a stubby can. There is no baffle in this thing and it is loud. Very loud. Loud enough to make the neighbours poke heads out of the door.
I have not taken measurements as yet I will do that first thing in the morning.
I am wondering if you guys have experience of these baffles you can buy on eBay etc. how likely are they to dramatically reduce the noise? Can you guys recommend any decent makes or have any ideas?
There is a hole drilled into the side of the can near the tip that appears to be a screw hole for a baffle. I can not see any makers name or branding on he can, there are some numbers and letters stamped around the back end but that's all I can see.
Here is a picture for reference.

Thanks
Grim

Your exhaust looks like a Delkevic stubby. It may be worth calling up Delkevic and asking if they sell the baffle for your exhaust separately.

Thanks. I will try and locate any numbers and give them a call.

Does anyone have experience with eBay baffles? Would I need an angled one due to the shape of the pipe?

For £25 I believe you can get the original baffle off the Delkevic site, although I'd call up Delkevic on 01782 338727 and confirm that the baffle on their website will fit your exhaust.

Have a look for a dbkiller on eBay, about 25 quid I think. My viper has one and it reduces the noise considerable. I leave it out tho because I like the noise and my neighbours are old and deaf.

I will give them a call today and see if they can identify it as one of theirs.
If I have to buy an aftermarket baffle will I require one set at an angle due to the angle of the exhaust tip?

Just put earplugs in.

Don't worry about the neighbours, someone probably has louder. I know my can was shorter and empty. Laughing

No luck with delkevic. Photos and sizes sent but its not a delkevic can. Any other ideas for getting a decent baffle sorted?
The can is 23cm long 28 including tip. 35cm in diameter.
The outside diameter of the tip is around 18cm and the inside diameter of the tip is 5.5 cm measured as best I can.
I can add more photos later if required.

Cheers
Grim

yes it would need to be angled or you will have to cut the tube down so the baffle fits in.

Alternatively get a big penny washer and tack weld to it to a short length of 6mm stud ( or bolt with head cut off) and wiggle it into the hole.

You can then angle it to get the sound to suit.

My can is well over the legal limit but nobody has said anything in two years. I don't tend to go out past 11pm though. I am considerate where I will free-wheel it down the street when leaving and hit the kill switch and clutch it up the hill when I'm about 100yds away.

You can more or less bolt any baffle in. I managed to reduce mine from 105dB to 99dB with a random baffle I got off somebody.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've managed to get hold of the previous owner. As far as he is aware it's a Beowulf can that has been cut down. They have done a good job on it as you cant tell. Is anyone aware if they sell replacement baffles? I can't see them listed on the website. I will call them tomorrow to see if they do, if not I've got my eye on a possible suitable baffle on eBay.

Yes they do:

I was going to post it looked like a Beowulf I had - thats a nice cut job too.

Had to buy one for the Fazer for the MOT. I also got a link pipe for the CBR on its own - really helpful company - just send them an e-mail.

Just to throw another one into the mix, that appears to be an "Sp Engineeing" end can.

Doing a google search produced this -

https://www.spengineering.co.uk/uploads/product/original/stainlessovalbigboreexhaust03lg.jpg

Which looks suspiciously like the end can you have there.

Here is a link to the webpage so you can decide for yourself -

Ring the bloke you bought it from and ask him what brand of can it is. He might even remember he has the baffle for it somewhere.

As above, it's a Beowulf can that's been shortened by an engineering firm. Beowulf are closed today so I've taken the plunge and ordered from a firm selling on eBay that have one they say will fit.
I will still ring Beowulf on Monday and see if I can blag another.
