Hi,
Have just bought a new front master cylinder brake system for my 125. It was off eBay and hasn't come with any instructions. I have never played with brakes before so I don't want to mess it up and my local bike shop wants to charge between £60 and £90 to do it. This is the item https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/350863917896
A universal manual or video would be perfect but any help is greatly appreciated.

What bike do you have?

You are only 5 minutes away so if you need help and I'm free, I'll pop over.

You will need DOT4 brake fluid typically.

You need to connect the hose from your current reservoir to the new one, then bleed the system.

£60 to £90?
Ouch!
As Paddy says its quite straightforward to do
and If your unsure then I suggest you take him up on his offer

1 tip
Have some old teeshirts/rags ready
so any spillage when fitting and bleeding dont get where it dont oughta be Very Happy

Hi

I would be concerned about the bore of that master cylinder on a typical 125s single caliper. What bike is it for?

Nothing on that listing seems to state the master cylinder bore. Too large a bore and you will have very little lever travel, no feel and need a lot of pressure on the lever to get the brakes to work. Too small a bore and you will have loads of lever travel (potentially enough that you land up without being able to operate the brakes).

All the best

Keith

with respect, that master cylinder looks like a cheap pile of chinese crap, I notice the cheap and nasty clamps to the fluid line and certainly would not put that thing anywhere near a motorcycle. I would suggest you look for an identical replacement to the original master cylinder, also be aware that by changing the cylinder to non original spec you could invalidate your insurance if you do not declare this mod.

Them clamps don't look a lot different to those fitted to most jap bikes.
I know what you mean though.
The braided hose looks a bit ugly and unwieldy mind.

The biggest downfall of these item will be when you smash a lever and cannot get a replacement.

I doubt if a replaced master cylinder would invalidate insurance but seeing as the weasily fookers all speak with a forked tongue anyhow, it is not beyond the of bounds of possibility.

He's bought it now anyway.

TLDR;It'll be reet for a 125;dont crash.

Your ebay item is Chinese and likely to be poor quality. Check the master cylinder piston before use. Mine have been rusted and covered in flaking paint - is this what "special stainless" means? Laughing . To check it, remove the brake lever, rubber boot, then the circlip and pull piston out. Lube seals with clean brake fluid before reassembly if it is good.

Search on here for reverse bleeding brakes for how to fill and bleed them.

I wouldn't put anything Chinese near any of my brakes. It's hunting for the cheapest parachute.

I'm going to try to use that in everyday conversation from now-on. I shall keep it in the same box as "Like a hand grenade looking for a war.".

I am not going to get involved in the technical aspect of this thread because having looked at the item, I decided there is no way it is going to end well.

A good tradesman will not refuse to quote on a job. Instead, if they come across a job that looks too much like hard work, they will quote a very high price in order to make the customer go away. You were quoted £90 for a job which requires two spanners and an allen key...
