I have an old hefty Hein Gericke one that I used. It's about a metre long or so. Does me.
Almax stuff is good, but pretty heavy. ____________________ My Flickr |

Almax or Pragmasis. Having had 2 bikes stolen while using inferior products, I am loathe to use anything else. Had no bikes nicked since I upgraded to Almax and Pragmasis, had a couple of half hearted looks / attempts / lifting the cover off etc.
Get some rope and thread it through your bike and round whatever you intend to lock your bike to perhaps add a little bit on to make locking / unlocking easier.
I would also get something else perhaps a decent disc lock as additional security / deterrent. All chains can be cut quickly with the right gear, some quicker than others, nothing is unbeatable especially with the new battery cutting gear.
Hopefully in before some derp chimes in with if dem wants it badz dem will takez it. |

I've got a Pragmasis 16mm, 2 metre long chain.
If they can get through that without me hearing (it lives under my bedroom window and it's jangly as fuck when you move it) they can keep the bike.
It does weigh 6kg-ish though. You'll need a seatpack or similar to carry it (don't put it in a packback as if you come off it'll fuck your spine up). |

I use two metres of 16mm long link lift/anchor chain from eBay @ £15 per metre delivered. About 1/5th the price of Almax / Pragmasis with most of the "nick the next bike along, pikey" deterrence factor. You won't be cropping that by hand, you'll be cutting through it if you really want it.
I wouldn't go with (much) less than 2m. One neat trick that you can do with 2m is to park the bike right next to an anchor point then put the chain over/under the bike and lock it to the frame on the other side. I find this more convenient and less fiddly than having to leave and work in a gap betwixt bike and anchor. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I got a 2m Series 4 Almax off eBay second hand for a good saving over the new price. If padlock is included, remind the seller to package the keys sensibly so they do not get crushed under the weight of the chain (or you will be bending them back into shape and they'll never fit quite right again - thanks whoever I bought my chain from ).
By the way, when they all say a Series 4 is heavy... it is. As in if you place it over your shoulder in a loop, it'll soon start cutting off the blood supply to your shoulder and leaving an indent. You can still transport it on the bike though if you're sensible about it, I fit mine in a backpack then tie it down good to the pillion seat. |

Long link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-mm-x-102mm-Long-Link-GALVANISED-ANCHOR-CHAIN-LIFTING-BOAT-YACHT-/110955299364?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_BoatEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item19d5738224
It's a bit lighter than short link, and (IMHO) more convenient. Instead of having to put a lock through both end links, you can slip one end link through any other link (thus shortening it to suit), then slap a lock onto the bit of link sticking through.

Well, you can compare them.
It's the same size and weight, it's unlikely to be cropped by hand, and I'd be very surprised if you could smash it (especially if you keep it of the ground).
It'll presumably cut more easily, and it doesn't come in a sleeve.
It's a judgement call, and comes down to your budget and needs. If you want the best protection, get Almax or Pragmasis. If you want to spend £30 (plus a lock[*]), I doubt you'll get a better chain for that money. My bike is parked up by a few others and is by far the best secured (and can easily be seen to be so), so that's good enough for me.
[*] I use a PJB822 "Magnum shackle lock", about £25 delivered. No, it won't do the same job as a Squire, and the quality isn't great. Mine was a bit reluctant to operate reliably until I packed the barrel full of grease.
But it looks massive (move on, pikey), and is convenient. The shackle detaches fully, and it's big enough that I can put the shackle itself through my frame, rather than having to thread the chain through. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I've got a 13mm pragmasis chain at 1.2m length as my everyday carry chain.
I purchased it with the 'noose' end, basically a large circular link which enables you to wrap it around/through in ways that you wouldn't normally be able to - also makes the chain seem longer than it is. My 1.2m is perfect. Teamed with a pair of disk locks its a good combo.

That would be my choice if you can't or won't carry 2m of 16mm. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Yup, 2m x 16mm ("series 3") + 1.5kg of lock is no bother at all in a tail pack. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
