Learn a language audiotapes while riding?

Has anyone ever used audiotapes while riding?

I spend about an hour riding a day now commuting, which is new for me, and thought I could make use of that time using language lessons. Obviously there's the distraction factor for riding, and it might not go in as well as I'll be paying more attention to the road, but worth a try?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Repeat the words to yourself, nobody is there to hear you mess it up so no need to be embarrassed.

You won't be able to learn in depth, to do that you need to practice reading, writing and grammar. But it's a very good way to facilitate learning a language.

I'd struggle absorbing one of them sat in a chair let alone riding a bike personally depends how well you learn from audio info i guess.

Having some french bloke over pronounciating in my ear would probably give me road rage

Suppose you could get some bike orientated tapes. "Ma moto est tres rapide!" etc

I listen to podcasts and stuff, it's worth it if only to break up the monotony of the wind.

I did once and the clutch cable snapped. So as I pulled over a friendly biker stopped and asked what the problem was. The look of confusion when I shouted in guttural German, "Das ist kaput!" was almost as sad as watching him ride away.

I taught myself the guts of German using those CDs and they are pretty good. I recommend the Michel Thomas ones as they can be torrented easily.

Good luck doing it on a bike though, there's too much repetition involved. I had to play back every section dozens of times before it sank in.

I sometimes listen to music when riding, but quite often I find I couldn't tell you what's just played cos the riding takes my concentration. I think the same would happen if trying to learn a language too, but worth a shot perhaps.

For that reason, I don't think it would be a problem, not concentrating on riding - I don't make an effort to zone out the music, it just happens, e.g., if I'm negotiating heavy traffic or a particularly twisty section of country roads.

Only problem might occur because to learn a language, you will have to concentrate on that - then it may distract from your riding? Dunno.

I wouldn't. I have a reasonable grasp of French but was still taking lessons; my teacher suggested I listen to French radio to try and improve my level of comprehension. I thought doing it in the car would be a good use of time, so I found a French station and tried it. I gave up after a couple of days because the concentration needed to try and understand what's going on really interfered with my driving. And that was just listening, without the need to "écoutez et répétez".

It's something I've always considered doing, as I spend a lot of time on the motorway consuming audiobooks. I imagine it would be difficult elsewhere though, instead of just mile after mile of straight tarmac.

Would not concentrating on the new language detract from concentrating on the road?

I could (sort of) understand it on motorway journeys - & the principle in general - but I think that concentrating on your riding / surroundings should be enough to be going on with.

I've tried the Michel Thomas ones in the car. I think I'd want an easy way to pause it and so on.
I did find myself driving relatively slower with the language CD on, repeating stuff etc..

Then I picked up a hitchhiker and stuck the radio on. Sped up a bit and got flashed by a setup over a bridge - thankfully seemed to just be some test system or similar as the setup looked a bit odd and never heard anything.

From my experience, it just does not work this way. To learn something properly, you've got to find it entertaining enough.

I taught my self english just because video games, movies, tv shows and so on were in english. Then, I have never had to do a thing at school because I was always ahead of the others and sometimes even ahead of the teacher. Today I can communicate just like it was my first language, my pronunciation is mostly a UK mix and I understand 99.9% of what I hear or read. There's only, let's say, negligible percentage of words that I do not know and I doubt I'd known them in czech. And, my spelling gets better and better day by day I spend here on the BCF. Thank you for that, I guess.

On the other hand I was also taught german at school, which I had nowhere to use, no films, games, nothing. So today, I know only basics of german and I've got basically no vocabulary in my head.

My advice, find use for the language you want to learn and then start to learn it.

Free and quite good. Even better in the privacy of a helmet so you can practice without your fluent French speaking missus taking the piss and correcting every other word.

I listen to podcasts mainly when riding these days, which is just a conversation really. I'm not sure if I could apply the right level of concentration to learning a language whilst riding, as I'd be forming mental images, mnemonics, seeing sentences and phrases in my minds eye, all of which I'm pretty sure would take away my focus on the road, or more importantly, surrounding vehicles and traffic.
