I suppose “winking” indicators on a low-cost motorcycle were a big deal back in the day. That brochure came only 20-odd years after the following appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald on 25 July 1955.
WINKING INDICATORS CRITICISED
British motoring authorities have announced that they will investigate the causes of the widespread criticism of the winking-light type of turn indicators now fitted to many British vehicles.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers, representing all leading British car manufacturers, has already started studying the problem, and will recommend modifications to the indicators as production programmes permit.
The Minister for Transport, Mr. Boyd-Carpenter, has instructed the British Road Research Laboratory to carry out investigations on the winking indicators.
The laboratory will report its findings in October.
Since the “winkers” were made legal in Britain last year they have been the subject of widespread controversy.
The Birmingham Police Force recently banned the use of the winkers on its police cars.
Branches of the United Commercial Travellers’ Association have asked the British Government to ban the winkers on safety grounds.
An article published in the journal of famous Guy’s Hospital claimed that there were too many coloured lights being built into the backs of modern cars, confusing the drivers behind.
Other critics say that the lights are fitted too low down, that they cause confusion when fitted close to a stop light, and that their exposed position makes them vulnerable.
However, some motorists claim that the winkers are safer than the semaphore arm because their flashing is more eye-catching than the arm, they cannot get jammed as sometimes happens to the arm type, and both left and right indicators can be seen from any angle behind the car.
The Superintendent of Traffic of the N.S.W. Police Force, Mr. J. E. Gribble, said last week that the winker-type indicators have been approved as fitments to cars in this State.
However, the winkers were not accepted as a right-hand turn signal, he said.
“Both winking turn indicators and stop lights must be used in conjunction with a recognised hand signal,” Mr. Gribble said.
“The lights are only supplementary to the hand signal.
“The semaphore arm type of indicator is accepted as a right-hand turn signal, and drivers using it need not give a hand signal as well.”
Thanks for the brochure. (Beaches are still used to suggest the freedom of a motorcycle.) I suppose I’m most interested in later brochures, around the turn of the century. Surely Honda was already publishing PDFs by then?
