My understanding is that you have to show a red reflector to the rear, and other than that, you can reflect any colour of light in any direction that you fancy.

Not illegal - but will get filthy 24/7 and need wiping to keep it reflective and white, more hassle than its worth i'd say 
Just wear a hi-viz if youre concerned about visibility - seen at all angles and a higher height when wheels hidden by vehicles often might not be. |

Must admit I didn't have chance to untangle it.
I think they try and get retro-reflective as showing as a blue light and the old "you can't display a blue light" rule. Where in fact you can, just not a flashing blue light. A static reflecting blue isn't flashing though, is it.
Although not found where retro-reflective battenburg specifically stated for police use. However, could always get under impersonating police. So if your battenburg wasn't retro reflective would it make a difference? I think so.
 after all that I think it comes under displaying only red to the rear, amber to the side and anything to the front. Emergency vehicles are exempt so can display blue to rear/side as well. I believe exemption under Section 44 of RTA 1988. So it looks like you can retro-reflect battenburg all you like to the front.

On a cursory read, the prohibition is on showing a red light to the front, or any light except red to the rear.
So don't have your battenburg on the arse end, or make sure it's non-reflective there.
However, the answer to the original question is this:
