I know it'll be virtually impossible right now, but do you reckon they'd ever come up with a way to have derailleurs on a motorcycle?

Using the push bike system wouldn't work chain would probably come off and they're also prone to having the chain getting jammed in-between the sprockets. Would be good though to be able to have the option to set the sprockets up for acceleration or top speed if someone could come up with a way to move the chain to a different sprocket without the risk of it getting jammed or something.

Nothing impossible about it but it'd be pretty pointless.

Surely it'll be the same as buying different sprocket sizes to change the acceleration and top speed, but with the ability to change them when ever you want?

It would be worth it just to see the size of rear mech that would be required to move a motorbike chain up and down a cassette! Laughing

Never in the past 20 years have I had a chain jam between sprockets, I've had it nearly jam in the spokes but I was setting it up and doing it wrong.

Not sure why it's needed on a motorbike, the deraliur system came about to give more gears than hub gears could, the motorbike has a gearbox

So you want to move the gearbox from inside the engine and attach it to the rear wheel? What kind of derp are you taking?

But you could change what gear you use without having to remove sprockets.

You can't do that with the gearbox!!!!

True, but what happens when someone turns up with a 24 speed box and you've only got 18?

Funny. But that just what your gearbox does....

Low gears for acceleration and top gear for top speed Thumbs Up

WTF would you want to move the gears from their clean, warm and oiled home and place them out in the cold wet and dirty place Laughing

Ah! Now if you combined a scooters expanding pulley variable ratio transmission as the 'primary drive' into the gear-box; you could have an infinitely variable 'step-less' ratio 'gear-box'.
Infinity, that beats a 5, 10, 12, 18, or 24 speed box by, well, gazzillions and gazzilions, doesn't it?

I frequently ride along and think to myself, 'If only I could change the gear ratio of my bike as I'm moving' Then I remember that I just have to move my left foot, and I can effect such a change with minimal effort.

Sorry but this is a stupid idea. Rear mech on a motorbike is pointless when you can use your left foot to tap down and accelerate harder.

Derailleur's will be a thing of the past in cycling long before they make an appearance on motorcycles. Gearbox set ups are getting more and more common in cycling.

Having a derailleur going into my wheel on a push bike is bad enough, let alone dropping a motorcycle and snapping it off. The AA would be thrilled though! Laughing
