Aprilia Rs 125 12K And 14K Rpm?

Hello, i've noticed that some (newer) 2 stroke RS 125 have 12K max RPM readout and others have 14K max RPM readout. What does this difference mean? What RPM can these bikes rev to? Are powerbands different?

The bikes could have slightly different engines fitted dependent on age.

The 14k max would imply it has a red power band fitted for max power, the 12k max would suggest to be a yellow powerband, which is a detuned red band for reliability purposes.

As mentioned above, I believe different model RS125's had different colour power bands fitted.
If you wanted your bike to rev even higher than standard, go into your local dealer or mechanics and ask what colour power band you can fit to increase the power of your bike and it's RPM.

Yes, yellow (12k) = restricted, red (14k) = full power. Just be careful in case a black power band is fitted, this is tuned beyond full power and can make the bike extremely difficult to control, even for experienced riders.

Let me put it this way. All factory RS 125 are restricted, right? When properly derestricted, they are fitted with new tacho readout to match their new RPM limit, right?

What's with the black powerband btw? Higher level of derestriction?

The black powerband simply allows more air through, along with a higher voltage to the spark plugs. Like Scythe mentioned, it's not recommended for inexperienced riders. Generally, the black powerband is used on the track when raced, not for the road.

Not all, you can buy a RS125 de-restricted provided you have the adequate licence. It is usually a special request at the Aprilia dealers to specifically order a de-restricted model.

Eddie Hitler summarised the black powerband up quite nicely.

I don't have much knowledge of what is undertaken to restrict these specific bikes, but usually it's the CDI unit and exhaust system. It could also have changes at the intake side in the airbox but I'm not sure about the RS125 specifically.

Powervalve will still be present, and you'll have to change the spark plug upon derestriction to either a red or black powerband. Red and black powerbands will also need an R&G air filter, R&G oil filter and a racing exhaust system such as Arrow fitted to maximise performance.

If you fit a red or black powerband without these mods, it will degrade into a blue powerband over time, leaving you with less power than you started with, but better fuel economy.

This is hardly related but what's the way to tell if the power valve is working? Does it "kick" the bike forward when accelerating at around 6k RPM?

Do you mean the end of the red line? Then no difference at all. They could mark the rev counter up to 20k, but it is the start of the red line that is important.

The redline isn't even marked. I have red that it has to do with CDI. Supposedly, Piaggio CDI bikes have 14K RPM reading. I don't even know what that means tho.

Probably just a cosmetic change when they did some retooling.

12k is a long way past peak power so no point revving anything like that high
