battery/charging issues

When I bought the bike the battery was flat so I got one off my mate. Still wouldn't charge. Would run fine with a kick though. Just replaced the rectifier as everything works when it's running (rulling out stator), albeit dim


Connected the battery to the car battery to try put some charge in. Displays 12.7 (same as car, turned off) but I disconnect the jump leads and the battery voltage drops to 5.5v. Going to leave it a little bit longer to see if it stays charged. It's not even enough power to sound the horn etc

I think the battery is dead and you should get another one. It only showed 12.7 because of the car battery plugged in the circuit. Ask a mate if he could lend you his battery.

EDIT: Your charging system might be OK. Just try another battery.
EDIT 2: There's no way the bike would drain a healthy battery to 5.5v that fast, unless there was a ''huge'' short circuit and you'd noticed that already. I did 60 miles with no charging.

Dropping to 5 is with nothing connected. I pulled it off to make sure it wasn't shorting on the bike. Still drops as soon as disconnected

Duff battery it has been left for far to long depleted and therefore it ruined it, and if it's a sealed battery you need to buy a new one otherwise if its the older kind where you can open them up to refill try refreshing the cells with new battery fluid, as that may help it?

New battery should arrive today. Found a guide to checking the stator and rec but I recon these are fine as electrics work fine when running (allbeit bit dim on idle)
