Like many, if I got that all-elusive lottery win, there'd be many bikes in the ol' dream garage, some common enough, others a little more obscure.

One that seems to have fallen pretty much off the radar is the Laverda Montjuic 500.

I read about these in an issue of Bike magazine back in 1980 (and got to see regularly close up as a Saturday lad in a bike shop) but all I remember is that they seemed to like it - bit frantic perhaps, but handled nicely, sounded good, and was fun to ride. I remember they also updated the bodywork a bit a year or two on from it's release - and that's where my knowledge runs out.

Anybody ever owned/tried/considered one? Know what they're really like? Have they all rotted away to dust? Laughing

(Edited cos I'm a blind idiot Laughing )

I remember reading a write up about this bike, a journalist visited a shop that had some for sale and test rode one.

Yes, a VW Beetle engined bike, not the best looking thing though.

Laughing

Not a case of memory fade (though it wouldn't have surprised me in my case) but apparently complete blindness - didn't see that thread Rolling Eyes
Thanks for pointing it out though Thumbs Up

So have edited my post to keep it more specific:

So question still stands - Laverda Montjuic?

Never ridden one but you used to see a few in 500 production races. Quite liked them. Think Laverda built them as an entry level Laverda and promoted them with a one make race series.
Didn't have a good rep for reliability and still couldn't beat a good 350 Yam in a race. Quite collectable now, expensive for a good one. I'd have one.

Reliability problems in racing, or just generally OGR?

I've always thought they were pretty in that orange, and I think that Bike article reported them as a bit of a hooligan bike - just the kind of thing that impressed me in those days. (oh look, no change there then Laughing )

Highly regarded amongst the Laverdista crowd, and its get a second mortgage price tag these days.
Must say that since I joined this 'exclusive' bunch with the Jota, I'm starting to have a sneaking admiration for the original Bregenzie models. Well overbuilt, but about as solid as you can get. Quite a few specialists that cater for their needs so they are a viable way of going retro with speed, reliability and a touch of Italian panache.
