I was riding back to Kettering on the A509 from Wellingbourgh which Is a up and down hilly road. On one of the up hills I noticed traffic in front move out and around something. Turns out this something was some poor lad on his 125 pushing it up a steep hill in all his bike gear on a freaking 'A' road that's fairly narrow too.
I took the left turn at the top of the hill and parked in a lay-by which is just round the corner and walked down to the guy. He'd ran out of petrol. So I pushed it the rest of the way and parked it behind my bike. Soon realized that he hadn't switched to reserve and once I switched it, it started just fine
He'd only passed his CBT Sunday and said he'd forgotten that it has a reserve on it. He followed me to the nearest petrol station as he doesn't know the area that well and we finally got to his work place.
What is it with people not helping out? You can clearly see someone's broken down or in this case ran out of petrol. Not targeting certain road users in particular but anything for 4 or more wheels (except maybe quad bike riders) don't seem to stop and help, certainly don't help bikers. |

Well done for stopping. I've stopped for 3 bikers in the last year, but all I could offer was the use of a phone (which they already had) or a push to the nearest safe place (which they were already in) so no point in me stopping really. If they look stranded then sure I'll stop, but otherwise what's the point? If they need a phone and don't have one then they should be flagging people down - eventually someone will oblige.
I was in Australia once and my alternator had packed up in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. No phone reception. The next morning I flagged down a Road Train and asked the driver to Radio some help to me, or failing that to stop in the Truck stop that he was due to pass in about 10 miles. He did neither and I was stranded in 40 degree heat for another 4 hours until a nice chap in a van gave me a lift to said Truck stop.
I would say that it depends on the time of day. Someone on their way to work, or driving for work (as the aforementioned driver of the Road Train), less likely to stop. Someone pottering about at the weekend might afford the time to help out. ____________________ Current: 2009 SV650 S, 1990 Kawasaki GT550

First and Last time I ran out of fuel I walked 3 miles to the nearest garage to pick up a jerry can of petrol and then walked back with it.
Do I wish that someone had stopped and given me a lift? Yes.
Am I angry that they didn't? No.
Did it teach me a fucking good lesson about preparing myself? Yes.
Have I run out of fuel since? No.
