My friend was riding in London today and his bike died. It's a Kawasaki ER-6N, 2013. around 12k miles. He text me and he's having it recovered at the moment.

Apparently there was some horrible crunching noise and it just died, wouldn't restart. Oil levels are fine, everything seems normal and was performing absolutely fine until this.

Any ideas?

fubared. sounds like it will be a case of removing the spark plugs and flywheel cover cap and turning it over slowly by hand to see if its siezed.

What would of caused a pretty new bike to seize if the oil levels were correct, no prior issues at all etc?

Going round to his in a bit and we're going to open his engine up. It's his idea he wants a look, I'd just stump the money to get it done at a dealership straight away but he wants a look first.

Any advice?

Cue dealer sucking in his lips over his teeth (always a sign it's going cost mega) and declaring you've made the problem (whatever it is) worse by opening it up first.

Find out if it has any warranty before you touch it.

Jumping to conclusions here suggesting the engine has seized.

A horrible crunching sound followed by the bike stopping dead could also be a broken chain wrapped round the front sprocket.

But it'd start again if that was the case...

Not if it was a) Stuck in gear or b) Took out the neutral switch. or c) Took out other bits of the bike such as the alternator casing.

Starter motor engaging while the engine is running is another possability, clutch letting go, aftermarket ignition advancer coming off. etc. etc.

So. For a first off we'd want to know what "Wouldn't restart" means. Whole bike dead? Any dash lights coming on? Turning but not firing? Spinning the starter but not the engine? Clicking but not turning? Graunching noise when you press the starter?

Yeah when I read it back..... Laughing

As for the bike. The lights etc come on, just absolutely nothing on attempting to start it.

Crucially when its in gear, you cant move it back or forward at all, not even with someone pushing while I was sat on it, The wheel was just locked.. Most bikes you can move back and forward albeit very sluggishly while in gear right?

Any ideas? All advice etc absolutely welcome

Probably not if it's in 1st gear. You might be able to do it in 6th.

I suspect either the rider or recovery man might have noticed the chain missing, no?

Has he tried bumping
Has he tried pushing it in gear to see if the engine turns over.

Maybe his battery died and it wasn't charging. Could be that simple. Dunno about the crunch though, may he hit a kitten at the same time.

Diagnostics baby.
