Not done that particular course but recently finished another refresher in basic first aid. The instructor was an ex-paramedic and also a biker. We were ahead of schedule so he showed us the basics for helmet removal if the casualty isn't breathing. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

As a paramedic, im well up for these courses, they save lives. i have seen a young biker die because of a occluded (blocked) airway due to the positioning of his neck and tongue, the helmet pushed his head far forward as he lay on the floor. if a member of the public who all stood about helplessly watching (most people know never to touch a crash helmet) knew the correct method for removing a helmet, he would have been ok, apart from being KO'd from the crash (which is why he didnt remove his own helmet) the PostMortem showed no other injuries, except a few scratches and a bit of slight gravel rash. He died because he couldnt breathe. in this case helmet removal would have seen this 19yr old walk away with a sore backside and a scuffed bike. correct and immediate 1st aid saves lives, simple as.

I did a BikerDown, was great, though they said they couldn't teach helmet removal but said use common sense, if they aren't breathing you can't make the situation worse, they'll die anyway without intervention.
As understand it, the idea is to prevent twisting and rotation of the neck and spine.
I've done a few first aid courses over the years, baby first aid when my boy was born, biker down, and when I was a youth in cadets, they should teach this in schools.
Hopefully, if I even need to use it, I'll be calm and remember some of it. |

Reading the facebook page it's not clear where else other than sout of England they are.
However, did follow a link to TwistandRide.Net training. This has a map you can click on for local schemes in the UK (although nothing in Scotland it would appear) ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Quick bump for this very worthwhile thread.
The BIKER DOWN course is getting a positive reception and is being rolled out to more and more fire services.
I attended the first ever one run by Suffolk Fire and Rescue yesterday and can confirm it was excellent.
1 hour on accident scene management
1 hour on first aid (incl how and when to remove a helmet safely)
1 hour on 'the science of being seen'
Plus free first aid kit, tread depth gauge, cups of tea and a handful of Jaffa cakes.
Can't recommend it enough. Suffolk have 2 more courses this summer in Ipswich and Lowestoft but a bit of google-fu may bring up other services in your area doing it.

Great idea, Failbook page is fail. Essentially impossible to find out information unless it happens to be shoved in your face at the right moment. There might be a course near me, maybe, at some unspecified time, if I ask Joe who'll forward it to Bob's mate Kev. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
