PostPosted: 15:31 - 19 May 2014    Post subject: Thicko question - CBT Insurance Reply with quote

I'm sure this has been asked before here a gazillion times, but i'm getting some quotes from comparison sites for a 125 Varadero.

I've got a full car license and a fresh CBT, so what am I selecting on the insurance form under license type?

Provisional license? I presume this needs applying for before I get a policy... or is this just my current car driving license?

I'm a bit thicko today so if someone could clear this up for me then Karma

I'm checking on motorcyclenews.com and thebikeinsurer.com

Cheapest quote i've had so far is a shade over £200, 9 years car NCB, no recent convictions/accidents etc. 32 year old male.

Any more decent sites to check?

On a side note, why have you put down 9 years no claims?

A common misconception is that your no claims go across multiple policies when generally speaking this isn't the case and can only be used on your car policy.

Also a lot of bike insurers won't accept car NCB, likewise with car insurers regarding bike ncb...

Could try Swinton directly from their site. They quoted me £125 for an eight year old Honda 125... was the cheapest i got.

You're on a provisional license for the bike, so provisional for bike insurance.

Check everywhere you can.

My first year on a 125 I paid just over £300. Was 34, full no claims for car (though had a "fault" claim 18 months previously when car got nicked). I live in a shithole! So the price might not be terrible, depending on circumstances...

So... having just a CBT certificate, and a car license won't allow me to ride a 12 or will?

I'll need a second provisional bike license before I can ride?

Will check Bennetts Thumbs Up

Check the paper part of your car license. In the "provisional entitlement" box (just under your name and address) there should be an "A". That is (obviously) your provisional bike license. You've done your CBT so it should already be there (it's often automatically there tbh).

Your car licence is also a provisional bike licence. Your licence is both, you don't need another licence.

And a CBT will allow you to ride a 125.

Shocked I got quoted £230 third party with one years NCD

I hate you

OP, you should be able to select that you have a full drivers license, doing that rather than selecting provisional might bring your quote down a bit (well £30 on a £300 policy for me).

Was gonna say, £2-300 is a bit steep for a 125! Thumbs Up

But he doesn't have a full BIKE licence, he has a provisional. If they ask about a car licence then he can put down the details of that, but putting anything other than provisional when asked "what type of licence do you hold?" will end up in him being uninsured in the event of an accident.

FYI - varadero 125, provisional licence (10+ years car licence), 0 NCD, 12000 miles pa, £180 for the year TPF&T.

Do they not teach you this on the CBT?

You have a provisional motorcycle licence, validated by having a CBT completion certificate in your grubby little hand.

Your car licence and NCB are largely irrelevant, though you may get a slight discount for having proven you haven't killed yourself yet.

Bendy has it spot on. You have a full license that automatically gives you a provisional entitlement on a motorcycle. You need the CBT to be able to ride a motorcycle using your current full car license.

When applying for insurance you have a provisional motorcycle license. You'll probably find there is a question a few lines down asking if you hold a full car license and how long you have held it.

NCD does not carry from car to bike.
