Tell me, in your budget, how exactly are you going to get your full licence? And how exactly are you going to drop your bike in your learning? You do know you cannot legally ride your own bike on the roads on L plates unless it is a 125 and you have a valid CBT certificate?

How old are you?
If you are under 24, licence laws could rather damp your aspirations, even if your budget doesn't.
Does your £1500 include the £750'ish you are likely to have to pay to do a DAS course to get a licence? and your 'gear'?
Hat, gloves, Jacket, boots? Importantly, locks and chains. Insurance?
Might not be much left to buy a bike after that.
Meanwhile, while I know you so eagerly dismiss 125's.... because you know you will WANT bigger... you do know that you probably don't need more than a 125... youknow most roads in the UK have speed limits on them 125's can break just as readily as big-bikes.. you know? Or maybe you no-Know Wink

What is in the driving seat here; your ego, your wallet or your common sense?

If you've already wasted time on tiddlers, then I agree with your plan to skip 125s.

However, you're doing nothing until you're licensed up, so your first port of call is the local training schools to find one with non-dickhead instructors and reasonable rates for CBT and a training course leading to an A2 license (if you're 19-23) or an A license (24+).

If you're 17 or 18 then just do the CBT and get yourself any old 125, because you won't be riding anything bigger until you're 19.

Ah, good stuff.

So we're clear, to get a full A license now you have to pass your tests (two of 'em) on a bike that's 595cc+ and at least 40kW / 54hp. Think ER6-n, Suzuki SVF650 (Gladius) or similar. The vast majority of people do that by going via a training school to get instruction and use of their bike.

By the time you've done that, you should be confident riding a 600+ bike, so there's no need to look at anything smaller unless you particularly want to.

I'd encourage you to wring the neck of the training bike and figure out what you do and don't like about it. Then you can make your decision based on that. Some people (self included) like lazy low down torque, some like revvy high end power, it's all good as long as you're happy.

The usual first bike candidates in your budget are Bandit, Hornet, Fazer, or if you like sportier, the CBR600F. Supermotos tend to come with a premium, you'll be hard pressed to find something like a DR-Z400 in budget.

tl;dr - CBR600F. Wink

eBay and Gumtree are decent sources of used gear - there's plenty of genuine "worn once" stuff out there at knock down prices. The majority of my gear is pre-sweated-in, which means that I've got a good selection of leathers, kevlar-denims and cordura textiles to choose from.

A helmet's the only thing I'd always buy new, although some folk do even gamble on a used one Paddy.

You are under the impression that the more you spend on a helmet the better it will be. This is not true.

Have a look at the SHARP ratings and see for yourself. There are some £500 helmets on there that have less safety stars than a £150 helmet. And indeed less than a £60 helmet.

Little bit of friendly advice. If you really want to know what helmet to get then forget price and get yourself down to a shop and get one fitted for you. They will size you up and give you a helmet that fits correctly.

As has been said many times, and as I tell the students on CBT. I'd rather put my head into a £30 helmet that fits correctly than a £500 one that does not. Wink

I was determined that my first helmet should be SHARP 5* rated. Fortunately, I also got one that fitted and did me just fine for a couple of years.

Now, I'm not that fussed. The range of circumstances in which it'll make a difference is tiny. If you're going to assume worst case scenarios, don't get on a bike.

Out of two identical helmets, I'd have the higher rated one, but I wouldn't trade fit, features or more than a few £££ price difference for it.

Just go to the shop. Select about 5 you like the look of in your price range. Chose the one that fits the best. Simple. Thumbs Up

I want the exact opposite. One that's relatively soft shelled, and that that deforms and then shatters to absorb as much energy as possible. Safety-wise, a cheap thermoplastic lid will do as good a job - or better - then fancy fibre composite.
