This doesn't sit right with me.

My parents split up when me and my sister were 7 and 5 y/o, we haven't heard from him for decades.

No-one set up a fund for us to get a start in life when we got older.

I have no doubt this is a real request, and not a scam. I would donate towards something that helps the kids that get forgotten but not towards kids that obviously have a loving and caring family.

What do you reckon BCF?

Quote:
A fund to benefit the two young children of the late Karl Harris has been set up.

Mr Harris died in a crash during this year’s Superstock TT and leaves behind Carl Junior (7) and Ella Mae (5). The fund’s aim is to secure the future of the children.

“We have received many messages of support and are grateful that Karl was loved and supported by so many people. His talent, courage and passion for motorsport was something that was a joy to watch for us all,” said brother Ryan.

“For many of you Karl was an athlete but he also has two beautiful children called Carl (Junior) who is 7 and Ella Mae who is 5 years old. For their dad to be taken at such a young age means we would like to financially secure their future, when they will need some help to get started in their own lives, when they are old enough to do so.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for us all but for anyone who knew or enjoyed watching Karl’s achievements we would appreciate any gesture you could make to help us provide some security for the future of Carl and Ella.”

They have the same chances in life as anyone else who has lost their father at a young age. In fact, I suspect their nest egg is actually larger than most.

It's such a shame for them all but sometimes the idea of charity goes a bit far in the 'Look at me; see how altruistic I am' stakes.

You almost have to admire their brass balls. Maybe the dad should have thought about the possible consequences of his actions before he made them. He wasn't exactly going for a bicycle-ride in the park.

Pleasured himself, it went south, poor kids. Rock & roll, deal with it (by getting mugs to pay for their future apparently).

I'm also thinking...

High-profile motorbike racer, no life insurance?

I'm not too sure about how insurance works and what cover is and isn't available and for what but, I have been told by riders of the TT that they can't get insurance cover to take part in the races. Whether any other type of life insurance would cover them, or if they were just talking about their bikes and gear, I'm not sure.

I do know that a few have had to have funds set up to either get them back to their home country because of the extent of their injuries, whether alive or otherwise.

I would suspect when you apply for life insurance as a professional motorcycle racer and also tick the box entitled "Race in the fastest and most dangerous road race in the world."*, just possibly they may decline to insure you, or at least offer you rather unfavourable terms!
Smile

* I believe it is, may not be.

My dad was killed in a RTA while riding a push bike when I was 11. My parents had divorced and I had chosen to live with my dad. Did kinda suck to be me as far as life generally goes for some time after. I DID get left some money and so on, but that really didn't "make up" for the situation.
You'd hope he'd have some put away, but, as it goes, presuming they are British Citizens, they actually have a really excellent welfare system that means they won't be denied any opportunities the average person gets.

Sure, they'll have to pay the money back after if they want to go to Uni, but considering the general standards of Uni levers, personally I think it's a good idea to make people think twice about it.

Just had a look at his results - some time since he was winning championships, probably didn't have a massive amount of money from the racing. Kids will be at School now, so time for mum to get a job.

Doesn't sit right with me personally. I feel very similarly about the pleas for cash for Kevin Ash's kids. No one forced him to take those risks, yes it's a pity he's dead, however I fail to see why he wouldn't have proper plans in place should something have happened. I also fail to see why race fans should then pick up the bill.

I will add, however - that I don't have a particular problem with the request (if it isn't shoved in people's faces or used to make people feel guilty) - fans may want to 'reward' as such, the people they enjoy watching taking the risks, even if it's a case of posthumously helping their family.

To keep sending them to private schools, IIRC.

Eh, you don't ask, you don't get. The meek will only inherit the robbed out remnants of the earth after the brass necks have rocketed off to Planet Paradise.
