All I ask is you keep an open mind when reading this because it's going to sound pretty grim. I came back from 6 months in SE Asia a few weeks ago. The first few weeks in Thailand I primarily wore shorts. When I got to Cambodia, almost all the men wore trousers. Only boys and tourists tended to wear shorts. I bought myself a pair of jeans to 'fit in', I'm half Asian and like not looking like a tourist - it has its advantages.

I've always felt more comfortable in jeans and have never worn shorts in England since I was about 11. I started wearing the jeans everyday completely discarding the shorts to the point where I'd wear them 7 days a week. I went on to Vietnam and bought a second pair of jeans and alternated between these for the rest of the 5 months. I never felt the need to wash them in this time because, although every day I was sweating, they never smelt or felt dirty. Actually I washed one pair once because I fell into a lake, but if I hadn't gone swimming in them, I would have gone 5 months of almost daily use and not washed them once.

Normally I'm a bit of a hygiene freak, I shower twice a day, sometimes thrice, and wash all my clothes (except jeans) after one wear. I'm reluctant to wash my jeans on a regular basis because, 1. the dye comes out so they start looking old, and 2. there really seems no need. I remember reading about an experiment done where a pair of jeans were swabbed and the bacteria was counted, then the jeans were worn on a daily basis for a year and then swabbed again. The bacteria count was exactly the same.

Does anyone else not wash their jeans - like at all?

Most of my clothes I was after one use but jeans I normally wash after wearing them around 4/5 times or so.

Again they never smelled funny but I washed them anyway.

i once had a set of black boot cut jeans that i used when i was working on a castrol oil blending plant, they were covered in oil so were pretty waterproof, and didnt get washed in a couple of years, until my mother paid me a visit and found them and fucken washed them,
i was pretty pissed off,
i dont think there is a real need to wash heavy trousers, my canvas ones only get washed when they are physically dirty, not because ive worn them a couple of days

I have a pair of those, never wear 'em for that reason.

I have a pair of desert camo shorts, found those call girl business cards that Mexicans give out in Vegas in the pocket. I went to Vegas four years ago.

That said, I just bought a new pair of jeans today (and am delighted to say I've gone down a waist size, to 34) and just washed em. That might well be the only time for them. Jeans have to be absolutely bogging before I'll wash them.

Cansa, hoorah for you, you have a special urethra. The rest of us poor fuckers occasionally water fountain, and shaking without hitting the trousers is a dark art.

Usually involving squeezing.

OP, I have worn jeans almost everywhere for over a decade. I usually have two pairs, and only wash them when they get muddy or too much crap on them from riding bikes.

Or, like you, if they get wet.

The waistband can and will smell like a swamp though, assuming you sweat hard and are wearing a belt... but only in a ferociously hot and humid country. Like you, I realised quickly that you had to wear jeans in Thailand/Vietnam, and so I did. Perfectly find when outside with the locals in fields drinking etc... bastard in sweaty western nightclubs.

But no, another tick for the "fuck washing these bitches".

A couple of years ago I was introduced to the world of denim geeks. These are denim enthusiasts who buy extremely expensive 'selvedge' denim jeans which come raw from the factory. They then wear them for an extended period of time without washing until the jeans acquire all manner of fades, whiskering ( Laughing ) and other signs of wear that reflect the wearer's activities and habits. This means not washing them for months or even years on end.

One trick they apparently use to keep the jeans fresh is to wrap them up in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer, this supposedly deodorises them.

I've just returned to SE Asia after being in the UK for five years, and still don't own a single pair of shorts. Mainly because IMO it looks fucking gash riding a motorcycle in shorts. I've also more or less been wearing the same pair of jeans daily that I've worn for years in the UK and only wash them once a week. They've acquired a distinctive odor that's only noticeable if you come within sexual-harassment sniffing range.

Please can you give me some more information about this? It's hard to buy 'non-gay' jeans these days, so I've recently been foraging in charity shops for jeans. Works out pretty well most of the time, even if they are a bit baggy usually.

One brand that springs to mind is Hiut. Made in England, etc etc. Pricey though.

https://hiutdenim.co.uk/

APC is this French brand that's pretty popular with the denim heads, I think they do straighter fits as well but most of their stuff looks pretty skinny, what with the majority of contemporary denim geeks being pufters doing it for the look and trend.

Since last year I've gotten all my stuff from Topman Laughing Cheap, quality is ok and lots of different fits although too much emphasis on the skinny as usual.

IMO if you do find a nice pair it's worth taking it to a good tailor. Had a lot of my jeans done and the fit turned out even better.

Dunno how much I'd trust doing manual work in 160 quid jeans! But certainly interested in deliberately 'heavy duty' ones. Like the original Levi's. I really do live in the things.

I like the idea of the tailor. My problem is I am almost always a 35" waist, with legs exactly between long and medium. Or rather, I like wearing my jeans quite high. Above the hip bone at least. So can be a bit of a sod find good jeans to fit.

But once I have those bad boys, I wear them until my balls wear a hole in the crotch Thumbs Up

Yeah Hiut look more like a lifestyle/fashion thing. Hence the godawful price tag. Or if you look at it the other way..

It's a funny thing really, but the way the market's gone, all the older brands that used to be quality i.e. Levi's are now mass produced because the demand for them is so high and people don't use them for their original purposes i.e. hard-wearing clothing. Which means the companies like Hiut who try to make stuff like they used to have to make do with a niche market and charge loads to survive.

I did see a thread on Metafilter recently about things that are overbuilt/bombproof. Dickies and Filson 'tin cloth' trousers were mentioned. Might be worth checking them out.

Most of my clothes don't get washed often. Jeans are generally every month or 2, shirts normally after 4 days, t-shirts probably weekly. I only shower every 2nd or 3rd day as well.

I hardly ever wash mine as they are a bugger to dry (no drier) but they never smell. I tend to drop a lot of food though so sometimes it's needed only to make me not look a tramp Laughing

As for freezing stuff to deodorise it - it does work. I do it with slippers etc all the time as for some reason mine smell really bad really quickly. I'll wash them, air them out for 2 days or so then freeze them for 12 hours and they won't smell. Obviously if you're gonna be putting shoes etc in there, wash them off first Laughing

My black bike-riding Levis have had one wash since I bought them over a year ago. It didn't make much difference, they still look grimy. Don't stink though.

+1 for Dickies. I had a pair a few years ago that I picked up from TK Max. I think I paid about £20 for them, but wore them **everywhere**. Gigs, work, lounging around - they were heavy duty jeans but were actually quite light with it. Only lost them when I dumped the girl that I was seeing, and she held my stuff to ransom - she wanted three grand off me for all my stuff. In the end, she had a house full of my stuff and I didn't give away three grand that I didnt have.

I remember watching How Do They Do It. They were in Mexico making jeans. They'd go through the whole process and the staff were proud of their jobs..until the end, they just couldn't understand why westerners wanted them to attack the jeans with belt sanders and other various power tools just to make them look worn. They didn't get it. I don't get it.

I tend to get jeans from TK maxx or somewhere like Debenhams. Like said before, find a decent pair then spend a tenner at a tailors making them fit well.

Back on topic. I don't wash my jeans unless I get food on them.

I generally only wash clothes when they smell of BO, or obviously if they get actual dirt on them (usually my son dribbling or wiping his face on them). Likewise with showering, I see no point in wasting water and energy showering twice a day. 2 or 3 times a week is normal in the Winter, maybe 4 times a week in the summer. And the odd rinse of the tackle in the sink, for the sake of hygiene.

I must add, I shower every day and in the summer more often. I'm a bloke with short hair, so it only takes 5 mins. My bike gear makes me sweaty!

I can see where this thread is heading so inb4..I brush my teeth at least twice a day!

Basically this, unless they are a really light colour. Those get washed regularly.

Depends on the food. Crisps/nuts, no problem. Would wash for stuff that stinks/can soak in.

Aside from that I don't usually bother that much. Maybe once everyone month or two?

I rarely, rarely sweat, shower once a day and use deodorant and if I wear a t-shirt more than twice there is definitely a smell.

I'm back in the UK soon, will hunt down a pair or two!

As for the washing point, I should point out I DO wash them about once every few months.

Largely because of my habit of wiping just about anything on to my ass.

My guilty secret that I'm plastering on the internet is I very rarely wash my sheets/bed linen. Just never felt the urge.

If I get a sweat on I'll wash it almost straight away, but normal day to day winter stuff? Fuck that noise.

Never used to wash my jeans at all. I'd buy one pair at a time, wear them everyday until they broke then buy more. Tend to dry/wipe hands on my jeans too so they got pretty hanging and I could smell them when sat down.

But... now my wife rather insists my jeans can't stand up and walk around on their own so they get washed about once a month.

In hindsight, the greasy, cold feeling and yellow/brown patina after about 6 months was a bit rank and I did look forward to clean jeans when they were too worn out.
