Tell me about blackbirds?

So I've seen a 2000 FI version, was thinking of a fat tourer like a BMW or a Pan but this missile caught my eye and I thought hmm that might make a good hyper tourer.

So what goes wrong with them other than reg/rec Hondas are legendary for?

Stator, reg rec. Looking £150 to fix on your own £££ elsewhere.

Heavy and lardy, fairly juicy, linked brakes...some say they like but I didn't.

Wouldn't bother, to me offers nothing over a ZZR600 but faster.

Other bad points are cam chain tensioners.
Linked brakes can be a pita to overhaul, although standard maintenance should be ok.

Factor in replacement chain and sprockets.

Doesn't shred rear tyres like Hayabusa has a reputation (urban myth?) for.
Get with hard luggage and it's an excellent sporty tourer. I'd say 2nd to the VFR (others will disagree).

I'd like one if it wasn't the fact I hate chain adjustments. Which reminds me, check if it has a chain oiler. If not, why not?

I seem to recall the early FI had some sort of flat spot. I believe was remapped in later models. So many people rated the old carb models better (much like the BMW GS 1100/1150/1200 which is better debates).

I'd say ridden like a granny, you'll see 170 to a tank. If you decide to spooge a little and do some 100+ work, expect mpg to half. Lowest I got to a tank was 90 miles and that was doing 170 into work and 180 back, indicated officer, not real speeds.

I have paddys old blackbird now.

I find it very pleasant. I've done some work to it, new fork oil, full service, different springs up front and getting some other parts soonish. I mostly wanted a bigger bike for commuting, two up and luggage and for trips abroad. It costs me no more insurance. Consumables might be a bit pricier but not enough to put me off.

It handles fine for me, but I'm used to lardyish type things. It can be a little bit annoying when manouvering about parking in tight spaces etc, but not too bad.

In terms of MPG, I get fairly good commuting, fun riding it's pretty shit. This particular bike is running rich as hell, on standard pipes, so I'm going to get a full system and power commander.

Long and slow handling, front forks not really up to the job, rear shock bad from new. Ridden as intended they are a luxury cruiser more than fit for German autobahns. Brother had one that I used occasionally, first time I've actually done 100 miles in an hour in the UK. Salford to Sutton Coldfield and back on one tank (the trip back, early Sunday morning was the 100 mph average). So, not hanging about and the fuel light came on just as I was getting into Eccles. Hellish expensive if the plastics get damaged and they all seem to fall onto their right hand side.
You would have to be a lunatic to kill the engine, frame and engine cases tend to get bit scabby if not looked after. To lardy for me but Bro loved it.... until it ran him into a cliff face in the French Alps. Those linked brakes 'can' be lethal.

I really liked mine except for the linked brakes which I hate with a passion.

Basically it means you lose a front disk when you only use the front brake. You have to use both front and back to get full braking power on the front, which also means you are using the back whether you want to or not.

Had it on my 1800 Goldwing and a variation of it is in my Trophy which was bad enough but on a hyper missile like the Blackbird it was utter lunacy IMO.

Ever ridden one?

It felt like what I imagine it's like to sit astride a torpedo. Didn't want to get round corners much though. Apparently shimming the rear shock helps lots; can't comment myself. Fast if a little too long for my liking.

The common blackbird (Turdus merula) is a species of true thrush. It is also called Eurasian blackbird (especially in North America, to distinguish it from the unrelated New World blackbirds), or simply blackbird, where this does not lead to confusion with a similar-looking local species. It breeds in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to Australia (where it is considered a pest) and New Zealand. It has a number of subspecies across its large range; a few of the Asian subspecies are sometimes considered to be full species. Depending on latitude, the common blackbird may be resident, partially migratory or fully migratory.

The male of the nominate subspecies, which is found throughout most of Europe, is all black except for a yellow eye-ring and bill and has a rich melodious song; the adult female and juvenile have mainly dark brown plumage. This species breeds in woods and gardens, building a neat, mud-lined, cup-shaped nest. It is omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, earthworms, berries, and fruits.

Both sexes are territorial on the breeding grounds, with distinctive threat displays, but are more gregarious during migration and in wintering areas. Pairs will stay in their territory throughout the year where the climate is sufficiently temperate. I really liked mine, but I had Ohlins internals front and Ohlins shock rear. With that setup, if you rag it a bit, budget for new bodywork. It scrapes on the floor when pushed. And I don't mean crashed.

I like mine, handles and goes more then quickly enough for me but I'm not particularly a nutter anyway. It doesnt feel lardy to me and switches directions well as stock but it is not an R1. Armchair torpedo is probably as accurate as you will get.

They are still pink inside. Mine was way too fast for me if im honest, fuel consumption was shite, my van gets better mpg. But on a long journey it was fairly comfortable once you get the weight off your wrists at 90mph+ and as for consumables i got through two sets of tyres a year at 130 miles a week mainly due to squaring off because of commuting.
Only let me down once because of me not using the bike causing the battery to die but other than that it was perfectly fine, totally fucked off that i sold it a couple of months ago for like 1600 quid.
