Bike on a bike

Has anyone got or used a cycle carrier on a motorbike?

I have cause to need one and been looking around. You can buy them but for a one off, seems a bit pointless so I'm likely going to build my own if I can't obtain one from someone else.

This sort of thing i'm looking at.

That looks a bit precarious to me, and as such i wouldnt be in a hurry to do it. Would it not be possible/easier to get the motorcycle closer to your destination (if you have one) and just walk/bus/train/taxi the last bit?

If not, I think the frame on one side of the rear of the bike, and the wheels on the other would be an improvement

Last time I rode to Germany there was a guy on the Eurotunnel crossing who had strapped his MTB to his bike with a load of straps and a rack/topbox. The frame was one side of the bike, with both wheels the other. This made it no wider than if he had panniers, with minimal rear projection. I don't recall if the pedals were off, but that wouldn't take long to do.

The simple task of typing "carrying bicycle on motorcycle" into Google shows many images for inspiration.

Even this example for a ST1100 that looks like a modified car rack to me...

If people can carry surfboards then I don't see why a bicycle would be any bother... as weasley mentioned, disassembling the bicycle could make it easier to pack and carry.

It needs to be inline.
I'l be doing about 350 miles with the rack on, probably 200 with the bike on, it needs to be inline for filtering and for the purposes of using a bike and not a van on the job.
Customer request.

It also needs to be able to be off my bike and rideable in the shortest time, putting front wheel in will be seconds, pedals won't take long but it's faffing with spanners.

I was thinking of putting a reflector on the back wheel with a bit of velcro to cover the overhang thing.

me and a mate once went bmx-ing, I had a DJ bike though. We both have Dakine thrasher bags.

We stripped the bikes down, strapped the wheels to the rucksack with bungee straps, the main frame was connected to the skateboard holding straps, handlebars and pedals in the main compartment, along with the tools to reassemble when we got there. He was on a TZr50, I was on my Vara 125. It is possible, just some building needs doing at the other end. I think he even took his forks out, stored the bearings in a pot.



Sorry, didn't read the requirements until afterwards, my method will not be faffing free. You need to be able to build a bike, and have the correct tools with you too.

I'm not sure why you would need to carry a bicycle on a motorbike, I would simply take some spare wheels, one set with off road one set with on road! Job sorted!
