Hi

My 2004 Speedfight 2 100cc will not start off the button. For a while it would sometimes work then sometimes not. Now just nothing. You get a click and thats it. I dont think its the battery.

The garage want £40 just to look at it and reckon it could get pricey.

Is there anything obvious or easy I could check before I hand it over to them? Im not very mechanical though!

Try changing the battery.

I did fully charge the battery and it didnt seem to make any difference. Not sure its that as some days it would work find and others it was just dead.

Battery was reading ok when I tested it on a meter.

Or starter solenoid (thinking same as a bike).

If this is the case then shorting wth suitably insulated screwdriver to test (remember to do the brake lever pull to start if needed).

Then IMO points to starter. If faulty/iffy may be drawing more amps than healthy for battery. The CB500's battery would need regular charges. Since I cleaned up the starter motor it's been fine and bike starts on the button each time (touch wood, don't jinx it).

I had an issue with my old speedfight 100 not starting on the button properly and it was due to the starter button being full of corrosion. I can't remember exactly how I sorted it, I cleaned it up I know that much but not so certain on how I stripped the switch. Be careful if you do it because the 2 contacts are small and can be easily lost.

I fully charged the battery today and it still didnt start so its not that. There is a clearly heard click when you press the starter button though. Nothing else.

If the battery is goosed and you fully charge it, there is still a chance it could discharge anyway, I had an old FZR that used to do it and I could of saved myself a lot of hassle by simply replacing it but we live and learn.

If you can get to the starter solenoid then bride the connections with a screw driver, if you hear a click and nothing more, the solenoid is fine, if you have a mate who has a good battery borrow it and then if the bike still doesn't start you can rule that out too and it will be a case of either a loose wire on the starter motor/frame or the motor bushes are dead.
