My new bike has a slight weave at around 85, which is just around the speed I like to sit at on my private test track Thumbs Up

It only does it when I have the top box on. It's not really bad but it would be nice if I could get rid of it.

I know little about the workings of suspension but was wondering if adjusting the preload up or down a bit might help.

Anyone with any knowledge care to offer an opinion?

Cheers

I doubt adjusting your suspension will help. You need to change the weight distribution and aerodynamic properties of the bike. A screen might help, but personally I'd ditch the top box.

I would at least check tyre pressures and check for abnormal tyre wear. Bit more air in the rear tyre and maybe a stiffer rear spring may help. Are your head bearings smooth and correctly adjusted? And what about your rear suspension linkages.

But ultimately as above......ditch the topbox....get a tank bag if you have to carry sh1t. I have found that rucksacks can equally cause a bit of a weave at speed.

Other opinions are available........

Thanks guys, I thought as much. TBH I only keep the topbox on to sling my helmet in while I'm at work, can just as easily take it in with me. Karma to you both Thumbs Up

My Pan does the same thing at exactly the same speed (when riding around my private estate).

Same cause - top box, If I take it off it stops. I normally only have the box on when I need to store gear in it parked up so I just deal with it and ride a bit slower.

Gets worse when I have a folding camping chair strapped across the pillion seat against the box. Must be to do with air flow coming round and buffeting the box.

The top box (weight thereof or aerodynamic effects of) could be exacerbating a problem that would otherwise go unnoticed. I would thoroughly check the following:

Wheel alignment
Wheel balance and bearings
Suspension condition and function
Tyre pressures and condition

Re: Pan weave, didn't the police ditch them when they noticed they started weaving at 100+?

They did ditch them for that reason but that was the newer ST1300, not the old ones like mine. May be wrong but I think there was a pretty major accident/death at high speed on the 1300.

Without the box it's solid as a rock at a ton (Autobhan of course). Even with it on it's not really a weave, more like the buffeting you get from a tall screen.
