When you press the starter, is it actually a 'clunk' or is it more like a loudish 'click'?
You said it has a new battery, was the old battery getting very tired? Using a nearly duff battery can make the starter solenoid unhappy.
None of the other things you've listed would affect the operation of the starter, unless someone particularly hamfisted buggered something while changing those things...
For the high idle and overheating - is the oil level correct? How was the k&n filter cleaned and was it re-oiled afterwards? (k&n is a complete waste of time on the vast majority of BMWs by the way, there is no lack of flow on the OEM units but the k&n lets through more crap).
When the new oil filter was fitted, did it have any stickers etc. stuck to the outside of it and if so, were they removed?
Passing an MOT means the square root of fuck all when it comes to the operation of a bike - it's minimum roadworthy standard check, not a pre-sales and service inspection. In fact, passing an MOT doesn't mean much at all any time......
If you can't fix it and get fed up, I'll give you 50quid for the bike ____________________ Any and all advice given should not be followed - if you have to ask it means you don't know so get a man in to do it for you. |

Thanks Dave, yes I have used Motorworks for many parts over the years and I'd say the bike is now 10% supplied by them, good set of guys there.
Hi pdg, yes I'd say more of a clunk than a click. Fitted a new battery as the bike had been previously SORN and I'd not kept up a charge on the battery so the old battery was goosed. Don't think I have hamfisted anything, but I'll soon know when I get time to strip it down.
Oil level is correct and the k&n was re-oiled, I've never had an issue with K&n and they save me re-buying a new filter everytime, it was not bought for any performance reasons.
Can't remember there being any stickers etc on the oil filter, was bought from Motorworks along with the oil, so I'm sure it's exactly what it should be.
Hmm, thanks very much for the offer but I'll have to refuse your generous offer of 50quid. ____________________ Best rally of the year: Farmyard Party

Thanks all, although the oil was just at the max mark, I reduced this slightly and that seems to have solved the over heating issues, won't be so generous next time
Still need to strip bits down, including the starter motor as it's not as efficient as it was and power supply to it seems ok, but will leave that for winter now.
Thanks again. ____________________ Best rally of the year: Farmyard Party
