Hi folks,

Had a massive off last week, wrote both the bike and my left arm off, amongst other things. Arm is still attached, I just can't feel/move anything.

I know about the DN1 and have been told aprillia make an auto; is there anything else I could consider? I'd rather not have a scooter; it might be over a year before I can get back on 2 wheels but I'd like to start planning now.

Cheers
Hev

Does your left leg still work ok?

If so, there's plenty of non-automatic options you can consider.

From auto clutches (available for dirt bikes and bikes used for drag racing) to right hand clutches - at the easiest you can just stick the clutch lever on the other side.
You can get quick shifters that will let you go up and down the box so you only need to use the clutch when stopped.

Modern medicine is pretty good. I don't know the details of course, but I wouldn't write your arm off just yet, too.

Sorry to read of your accident. Bike aside, what's the prognosis for your arm?

Contact NABD and ask their advice. You do not need limit yourself to an auto. Have you been told that the arm will never work again?

Honda make a few DCT bikes, they're all clutchless.

the nc750 series, and the vrf1200

NC700/750 range with DCT. Regular bike with dual clutch gearbox which is extremely frugal, if a little dull. Depends what you want it for though.

In 1972, my uncle was 17, he wrote his Triumph 500 off. Back then, no helmet.

He was unconscious for 6 days, he woke up, he still speaks in rhyme now. Not all the time, but occasionally he'll just say anything so it rhymes. He also lost the use of his left arm, after two years trying to lift a stick, he regained some control back. His fingers are still not very dextrous but, it's basically back to normal.

The doctors were going to cut it off, but his mum told them not to, he wanted it cut off as well. But eventually it was decided he should stick it out, because blood still flows there and he could still feel some pain sometimes.

It's not very useful, but might give you some hope for your arm? Thumbs Up

Sorry to hear about your off. Sad

It all depends on what kind of bike you want and what you want to use it for. Thumbs Up

If I had to have an auto, the VFR 1200 or the new Goldwing.

Other then that the DN1 because it's so quirky and when anyone said why are you riding that? I'd have an excuse. Laughing

Other than that, ther is only one disabled riders bike I love, the Can Am. Wub

The aprilia mana is the automatic you were thinking of, normal looking compared to the DN-01 and has a foot gear shifter, buttons or a couple of full auto modes. As others have said, don't write the arm off just yet.

I saw a guy with a totally nonfunctional arm at my local bike shop recently. He was riding the tidiest looking RD400 I've seen in a long time. Like a hooligan, too.

You can still ride decent bikes mate, so don't paint yourself into a corner on that account.

Thanks for all the suggestions, very helpful Smile

I can still use my left leg when the swelling goes and the big chunks that are missing heal up.

Prognosis for the arm: nerve grafts on Thursday taking nerves from the ribs (had a 7 hour op last week for the same thing but with nerves from the sides of both feet). They are aiming to give me some bending\flexing ability and hopefully the nerves will grow fast enough to give me wrist control (quiet in the cheap seats). Getting any finger control will be at least 18 months-ish.

I haven't written my arm off yet, you see all sorts of 'they told me I'd never walk again and now I'm climbing Everest' type stories, just planning out my options Smile

Thanks again x

I'm not able to give you any advice on what bikes to ride, but I am curious to know what happened with your accident? Details?

I don't remember anything about the accident apart from a brief memory of the paramedics cutting my gear off me. It was a lorry I collided with, one of those earthmoving quarry ones.

Shocked Ouch. Sounds nasty.

Hope you recover quickly, and it's probably best to concentrate on that rather than what bikes you can ride by the sounds of things Laughing

Just noticed that your last bike was a VStrom 650.

The closest auto bike to that would be the NC750x

I would go and pick the brains of the NABD, they can also help with any modifications that may help you ride a bike.

Just read the review for the NC750, could be just this the thing.

Very sorry to read of your accident and subsequent injuries but it seems like you have a great team of doctors willing to give it their all to make your arm function as best they can.

There is a bloke that rides a slightly modified R1 at Lydden Hill who I believe hit a tractor and lost his left leg and use of his left arm last year. He is so quick, have no idea how he does it but it is amazing and pretty damn inspirational watching him ride that thing.

Given that your leg should recover more or less then it would seem that you could ride anything, maybe with modifications but set your sights high.

Good luck with your recovery.

Glad to read there's a positive outlook in the prognosis. I damaged my sciatic nerve on a bike some years ago and, luckily, without grafts the nerve repaired itself. I do not have 100% strength in my right foot as a result but it still allows me to do everything I could before.

I look forward to hearing updates on your progressing recovery.

You can have an optional gear lever fitted next to your foot too - so you'd have full auto option or be able to change the gears with your foot when you want (without using the standard handlebar buttons)
Hope the arms recovers, I bet it's frustrating not having use of it for the moment.

G Mentioned auto-clutches, if you're able to use a left-foot gear changer still the Rekluse range would work for you?
