Manufacturers like to save a few bob by putting an old engine into a new frame and calling it a new bike.

So what is the most recycled engine ever?

Off my head I'm thinking of the NTV lump.

Bros / NT -> NTV600 ->NTV650 ->NT650V Maybe bored out for the 680cc

Varedero
Transalp
Africa Twin

But Suzuki seems to be recycling engines like the bandit and SV heavily as well.

Either oil boiler GSXR or something weird like a Z250 that became the GPz305 etc.

Oh there's loads and load over the years. I don't particularly disagree with the concept of re hashing and re-using old motors, if they keep developing them and can still meet emissions and noise regs.

It probably happens more in the car world, as new bikes in competitive classes need to be lighter and faster to keep pace with the competition. But saying that bike manufacturers have always had less stringent emissions targets to meet, noise is not that hard to control, and unlike car's they don't really need to worry about NVH, quick warm up's and maximising mpg either.

Just a few I can think of:
1, Suzuki GS500 engine, gradually developed from the old 70's GS400.

2, Laverda's 650 and 668cc air cooled twins, developed from the old 500cc Montjuic. It's said that the water cooled 750cc Formula 750 motor despite quite a lot of differences is still loosely based on the same design.

Then there's bike like the Kawasaki Ninja 250 where they dug out the drawings and tooling for a late 80's motor and re-developed and re-tuned it for a modern bike. It's now probably worthwhile as they have re-designed it to a 300cc which I think is now quite useful!

What about the Minarelli AM6 engine?

Seems to have been in most sports ped frames over the years and still going strong.

BMW boxer engine. It was fitted in too many models to list and the basic design didn't change for a long time.

If you count copies then it has to be the Honda CG125 engine.

Happens more in the car industry, the previous Ford Ka engine first saw light of day in the 1958 Anglia before being re-hashed for the fwd fiesta

The aircooled VW engine was the same engine for the beetle, kaman ghia, VW bus and a couple of other models from its 50's launch until the 80's

Rotax 500/600/650 single.

Fitted in everything from rotovators and generators through Jawas, MZs, BMWs, CCMs, quad bikes, hovercraft, microlights...

For a particular marque, the kawasaki EX450/500 twin engine has appeared in many, many different motorcycles over the years in slightly different states of tune.

CBR600? F, RR, CB, CBF and the one in the new 650s can't be all that different.

Ducati belt dive motors must be in with a shout. From the 500cc Pantah of the 80's you can trace that heritage through all of the Ducati range, as well Cagiva, Bimota and I'm sure I've missed at least one other manufacturer.
But besides the BMW boxer engine the one engine that seems to span all the decades must be the Moto-Guzzi V twin lump.

Hi

Depends on what you count as the same engine. As above, the Ducati Pantah engine has gone through generations of Ducatis, from 350cc upwards, air cooled, water cooled, 2 valve, 3 valve and 4 valve, etc. But you could also claim that quite a few different engines.

Wholly new engines are not that common and get numerous tweaks as the evolve.

All the best

Keith

Oil cooled Suzuki GSXR engines is where i'd place my money.

GSXR750, GSXR1100
GSX600F, GSX750F
GSX750, GSX1100
GSF600, GSF650, GSF750, GSF1200

To the naked eye, the engine looks almost identical in all of the above bikes, just different colours and slightly different mounts.

They all derive from the same old oil cooled GSXR engines but I think there are a few differences and obviously they have different engine displacements. But yeah, it's a recycled engine with a few tweaks, used in a lot of bikes for a number of years.

Thinking about the other end of the scale. I can't imagine many (if any) one-off engines that only saw production once Thinking at least not in the last 30 yr?

Engine in my pit bike I expect would be a contender for most common, especially considering that essentially the same design has now had several different manufacturers over dozens of models, honda, Lifan, stomp etc.

LC4 in the Ktm is yet another that they've just kept evolving through the models. And to the result that so far, at 5k, the SMC has not yet skipped a beat Thumbs Up .

DRZ 400 engine used in 3 configurations of off-road/SM bikes, and in Suzuki's quad bike range. CCM borrowed it as well for their supermoto and I'm sure they did a sort of VanVan type road bike with it as well, not sure.

GPZ 500 engine comes to mind as well, used in the KLE although less powerful.

Ariel or JAP single, both designed by Val Page and used from the 1930s up to 1958 in the case of Ariel and the 70s with JAP.

As I figured. Been around for years.

Interestingly, found a Suzuki wankel rotary that only featured in 2 versions of one (RE5) model 1976:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_RE5

But wouldn't know where to begin a search for a newer "1 bike" engine.
If there is such a thing since the 80's, which I'm starting to doubt.
