Hi All,

I had a puncture the other day ( almost 8 month from when I last had puncture).

My tyre is metzeler and now I am considering whether to repair it or replace.
I understand the bike minimum tread depth is 1mm, I understand this is across the tyre, correct me if I am wrong.

now when I measured it , the middle bit close to the center is very close to 1-1.6mm with the sides having 3-4mm left .

I think it is due to mainly highway and straight riding.
what is the tread depth on brand new tyre? 6-7mm?

I am trying to think whether to spend £8 for repair or £130 to replace if I am going to need to replace it soon after.

I guess the wear will impact cornering etc , is that correct ?

I am looking at michelen pilot 3 or dunlop roadsmart 2

The minimum tread depth is 1mm across three quarters of the tyre.

I'd repair it and keep going as it's got loads of life left yet. Wink

Repair it, if you don't do millions of miles a year it'll take a couple of months to get down to 1mm

Doing 600 miles a month so do you reckon i can get 3-4 month out of it?

As it is , is it going to be worse for cornering etc

New tread depth depends on the tyre, usually between 6 and 8 mm. If you buy part worn from a tyre shop they are usually 5mm

if your at 1.1mm in the centre, I'd personally just get a new tyre.

and if it's 3/4 mm outside and dead in the middle your doing a lot of upright riding, consider different tyres that will last better

thats right

in my 45 mins journey i only have 5-10 corners so what type of tyres would you go for

I also think my tyre would be have less traction in rain as it is almost bold

I'd look at sport touring tyre, still give good grip in the twisties but set up for crunching miles too

the Bridgestone bt023 are supposed to be pretty good, just look up sport touring tyre reviews and have a read

I run pirelli angel gt's on my 916, I do a similar commute about 200 miles a week motorway with some a roads. after roughly 8k miles my tyres are probably half worn at most ive not measured them but there's certainly a good amount of tread all over and they've handled all the abuse ive thrown at them. they were £230 fitted for the pair

It's shagged, I'd replace it.

As for tyres, I like PR3 but they are overkill if all you do is commute.

Realistically, I doubt you'll get much more than 7k* from a PR3 and they aren't exactly cheap.

* yes I know some Americans can get a bazillion miles per tyre, but I can only assume that they ride like my grandmother.

The profile on that tyre must be fucked.

Fronts are a dime a dozen (well I buy mine part worn, 5 sets for £100) so I'd just throw a new front on when it ends up like that, it's going to cause adverse handling.

If it's an R6 related question then Jizz-Bummy is your man, send him a PM.

I'm running BT023s at the moment and have no complaints

Get a new tyre, otherwise time and money wasted if it is down that low anyway.

well when I used confused.com it did a full hpi check and had a box to input the vin number which once entered it would have said it matched their record.

that was it .

it still did the hpi by just providing the number plate

If it's got just over 1.1 mm on the part you measured it's likely to be under 1mm at some point on the tyre.

Considering the not brilliant weather we get, I'd just change it.
