Heya all, looking for my first bike and I've found one that seems good from a dealer advertising on ebay but he states the only problem with it is that it's got a blowing exhaust. He says:

"PLEASE NOTE ONE OF THE EXHAUST STUDS IS SNAPPED SO THE EXHAUST IS BLOWING AT THE HEAD - EXHAUST IS GOOD SO WILL NEED NEW CLAMPS AND STUD."

It's PX to clear. Lady owner for 8 years. 32000 miles on it. Looks pretty standard all over. Sold with MOT Till Sept 2014.

It's a good price but I was wondering if this is an easy/cheap job to fix or should I avoid it?

Snapped studs are usually a complete pain in the arse to sort.

I'm guessing the owner tried to remove the exhaust to replace, only to find the studs seized in place and starting to snap. As such, expect a few more to snap on you when removing the exhaust to sort the broken stud.

Snapped studs require heat, oil and loads of patience and/or luck, or if that fails, drilling out. Drilling can go very wrong very quick.

BCF search snapped exhaust stud - loads of threads.

Avoid. Pain in the arse thing to sort yourself and possibly expensive to get someone else to sort.

Think of it this way if it was going to be an easy fix the dealer would sort it and sell it for more.

I wouldn't trust a dealer that wouldn't sort that out before selling.

How about asking him for a quote to repair it either at cost or mates rates? If his mechanic has some spare time it might be worth it. If he turns it down then he has already looked at it and decided it's not worth it to him economically. So walk away, there will always be a bike with your name on it out there.

Yeah I've sent him an email asking how much for them to repair it, just waiting to see what he says.

There was another I was looking at earlier on buy it now or best offer from a private sale but I emailed an offer which was my max budget (£150 cheaper than the BiN) but he said he's had loads of interest so will probably get his buy it now for it Sad

The search continues. May well be autumn going into winter till I find something for me, but if that's how long it takes then that's how long I'll have to wait.

With stuff like that if it's near you ask to go view. If you like it wave the cash you'd be surprised how a fistful of £20's available then and there makes people accept a lower price.

What bike is it?
How old is it?
How 'cheap' is it?
SOMETIMES, exhaust studs shear; you get the pipe off, then can get mile grips in on the remaining shank, to wind out the stubb..
Most times?
You end up with snapped cooling fins; holes in shanks, filled with broken hardened steel EZ-Out, chewed up metal galore, burned fingers, and resort to taking the head off, taking it to a reconditioners, and getting it machined, and helicoiled... and it might be back on the road for Summer 2016.
They can, in short be a bitch.
and I wouldn't take the lack of fix by the dealer to mean he's 'sharp'... but its a problem he probably knows only too well, is better left to some-one more nieve, foollish and optimistic...

Do you want a bike to ride, or do you want a bike to fix?
If former... buy one that dont need 'fixing'.

If it was an easy fix the dealer would have sorted it before trying to sell.

Yeah I think I'll give it a miss then. It was a 2001 Honda Hornet. Dealer has it on there for £1295. I messaged him earlier today about the cost of him fixing it and so far no reply.

Looking at Ebay prices that does not look like much of a bargain.

I've been looking for them in 100 mile radius up to sort of £1200 for a while now but can't seem to find any/many. A guy was selling a red 1 in very good condition (only 1 mirror though) for £1600 and would only drop £100 on it. It ended today and he hasn't sold it so maybe he'll relist it cheaper. Another one I found, 2003, 15k miles and he wants 2k for it. Couple more on my watch list under 1k atm on bid so just gonna see what they fetch.

From our very own for sale pages

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=292699

You might get a BCF discount or some sort of deal on delivery, doesn't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the help and advice all. It is tempting but I do think I can probably wait & search around for something better. It was about 65 miles away from me.

I'm currently looking at a 1998 Hornet on bid atm £900 and only 47 miles away. It says on the ad it was MOT'd last month, It had a full service at a local dealer last September and has had rear brake pads and a master cylinder kit recently fitted.

Is the fact a master cyclinder kit been fitted anything of concern or?

If at all possible, try not to let distance get in the way of buying a good bike Wink

haha yeah actually I found that one yesterday. I really like the white and black colour scheme but that light! Sad Would it be easy to change back to the original?

8K miles though...with history Shocked

I've sent them a message aswell just now Smile I always feel a little more wary with gumtree adds :/ I'm sure it'll be a goodn' though, hopefully.

There also this one, 1999, near 23k mileage: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201407185910839/sort/recpriceascdefault/usedbikes/cc-to/600cc/model/hornet/make/honda/quicksearch/true/radius/100/postcode/pe134ed/page/1?logcode=p

Just got a reply back from him saying that £1250 is a hard price as he's spent £250-300 on a service.

Right, I was planning to go an view the white one as it seems almost too good to be true but it's 2 hours away and I don't really know anyone to go with atm. So I'm going to find a hornet somewhere as local as possible, I think the local dealer has one, and sit on it before I go down there to see if I can comfortably reach the floor on it. Hopefully he won't have sold it before then, but if it's meant to be it's meant to be.

Its the same bike I was interested in.But it just isn't a job I could do and it wasn't quite as clean as it looked in the pics. But decent nick all the same.
They are quite busy and I think they put it on the back burner and are hoping somebody comes and takes up the diy offer. They have quite a few bikes and do a lot of track day stuff.
Very honest guys and never seem in a rush to sell the bikes. They probably will do it up at some point and then I might go back and have a second look myself.
