Someone recommended in the 'new riders' section to have high beam on for filtering to aid being seen.

Someone told them to stop being a twat (might have been because Bodyguard suggested it)

I have been using full beam generally when using motorways for the past two years on both my varadero and on my ZZR600 to aid being seen, justifying it as my lights are not brighter than HID's etc

Do you use full beam for filtering?

If so, motorway only or generally?

good idea / bad idea?

Full beam is only for use on empty roads as the beam is set higher than the dipped. You'll blind people.

Last thing I would want is full beam when filtering, what if the guy in the car checks his mirrors and cant see anything because you are blinding him with your lights? Surely that is more dangerous.

Bad idea.

Brightness isn't the same as dispersal pattern. Full beam delivers intense light centre weighted without giving a toss whether it's delivered into oncoming drivers' eyes - or in your instance, dazzling them off their mirrors.

That would be me Laughing
And NO bodyguard saying it was not why...

Go and sit in a car and put your bike so your full beam is shining in the mirror...

What is the result.

YOU CAN'T SEE

High/main beam. Is for unlit roads to help you see.
It does nothing to help others see you or even to be able to work out how far behind you are.

From the highway code.
Quote:

114

You MUST NOT
use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users,
including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users (see Rule 226).

In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.
Law RVLR reg 27

115

You should also
use dipped headlights, or dim-dip if fitted, at night in built-up areas and in dull daytime weather, to ensure that you can be seen
keep your headlights dipped when overtaking until you are level with the other vehicle and then change to main beam if necessary, unless this would dazzle oncoming road users
slow down, and if necessary stop, if you are dazzled by oncoming headlights

agree with above in that it's a really bad idea to use full beams on normal roads in normally lit conditions.

I've been in my car with a knobsack rider behind me with high beams on. Had to adjust my mirrors to stop being blinded. Can you imagine how distracting that would be at motorway speeds?

As said, it makes little to no difference in you being seen. You're better of improving your obs and road positioning as that'll actually save your life.

Bikers who ride around with full-beam on deserve a slap.

This is one of my pet hates.

If you think you need to use main beam while filtering, you probably are inept and shouldn't be filtering anyway.

nope. All you need for filtering is common sense, appropriate speed and good observations. Nothing else will help you. I also read that there is a craze for people putting their hazards on when filtering. Equally as useless and annoying as having full beams on.

When I'm in a car and the car/bike behind has their lights on full beam, I adjust my mirror to bounce the light back at them. They soon dip 'em.

Definitely a cunts trick. Its also very hard to judge the distance and speed of a motorcycle when they're using full beam.

Terrible idea. It's impossible to judge distance when you're being dazzled, it's been proven by a number of different studies. Whoever does this is a moron.

So, it's unanimous then,

I'll see how drivers behave next week without it, used to find I got a bit more space on the varadero with full beam on. Stopped caring now I've got better at filtering and a bigger bike.

It's rude.

While it probably WILL make people take more notice of you, it also WILL make it harder for them to judge your position and speed. The latter not being very useful and could easily be used to show you were at fault in an accident.

Compared to what?

Bikers, self included, have a dreadful habit of projecting our beliefs as though they effect reality. "He made eye contact!" and "Loud pipes save lives" are a good tie for first, but this sounds like a close second.
