Gym, use free weights and bars don't use machines as they do half the work for you and neglect minor control muscles reducing your usable strength. On the bench press machine I can easily go over 70 kilos, but with a bar I generally can manage 45.
Select a weight which is challenging where you can JUST about do your 4 sets of 10, if you can do it easily add more weight. If you can't reduce it.
Ask others about technique, for example bicep curls a lot of beginners will cheat by swinging.
Work outs are a very personal thing, I focus on my triceps, lats and triceps as when I had huge delts and biceps I found it affected my fighting style which depends on position, technique and balance rather than brute strength. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. I'm in a similar position to the OP.
Following with interest.
I do enjoy swimming, but most likely resemble a drowning fly to everyone else.
Surely they hit the gym aswell as swim loads though, very good for toning you up not sure about making you bigger. ____________________ 07' Honda Hornet now full powaah! My guide on performing an oil change! |

If you want to put weight on, you need to eat more calories.
Simples.
None of what you describe particularly says 'healthy' (or not healthy) that I can see.
'Healthy' to me is a good choice of food to meet your goals.
If your goal is to put on weight, a lot of low calorie density food might be a bad idea.
Me, I had a whole 900ml tub of icecream, which I'd consider a healthy choice to meet my calorie needs. (Actually, I really should eat a little more as I'm still slowly losing weight, which probably doesn't help recovering from a couple of injuries.)
If you want to put weight on, specifically muscle, the first thing to do is to eat more calories than you burn in a day.
There are various calculators and other ways you can figure it out (I have a very expensive machine that will give you a pretty decent figure), but the best way I'd say is to use an app like libra (or a spreadsheet) and track your averaged weight with daily checkins.
If your weight is going up, sorted. If not, eat more .
Of course, if you want to put on muscle you need to be using your body.
I'd second the suggestion of stronglifts, or starting strength, which is similar.
You can get your own weights set up for not too much, or at a gym, of course.
Aim to have at least .7g of protein per lb of body weight when putting on weight. It won't hurt to have more.
Do make sure you get some fat, which is important for various hormones and so on.
Once you've put on some muscle, you'll probably then want to cut some fat. Putting on muscle pretty much always comes with fat*, and you may well find you want to lose some more anyway to get the 'definition' you are after, which tends to be more about low body fat (especially abs etc) than big muscles.
*If you go REALLY slow, it won't so much, but it's generally quicker to get to the same point to put on muscle with fat, then lose fat and repeat than to go slow. |

Haven't read other advices here but this is what I used to do before exams at uni (using those as an excuse for why I'm a lazy git now XD)
Caloric deficit for cutting, caloric surplus for weight gain.
Balanced diet fruits, veg, nuts, beans, vary it, raises testosterone.
Stable steady excess protein (lots of boiled chicken, yes it gets very boring)
Cycle your Carbs (get into a weekly pattern for example 3 low carb days followed by a high carb day, rest low carb days, end of week high carb day, repeat) this'll help lose excess fat rapidly when combined with:
High intensity daily Cardio but short intervals like 30 minutes or so - Lift daily (Rotate muscle groups, allow couple days rest) what worked for me was calisthenics type workouts (Check out Barstarzz for an idea, obviously I'm nowhere near these guys in strength or ability but they're great motivation!)
I used to go to parks like primrose hill and do bodyweight exercises daily, they have dip bars and pull up bars and all that. It was nice to be out in the open so often. I used to go every day for like 2 weeks then I'd take a few days off completely from total fatigue, then repeat. It gives great results tbh aside from the constant sore muscles xD
Buuuut I've been a massively lazy git for the last 4 months. I need to jump back on it real bad but I'm finding motivation hard.
Also a hobby sport ontop will make you more lean without you even realizing it, I used to do mountain biking & cycling on top for enjoyment which gave nice results.
Don't expect to get ripped quick, it takes months to see results, and dont expect to get strong quick either, it also takes months. See it as a lifestyle change, and in a few years you'll have an impressive physique.
Edit: Dont invest money in supplement gimmicks either, extra protein doesnt hurt and creatine is okay (with plenty of water). But instead just invest faith in yourself, not products. If you're looking at shakes to get strong you're missing the point, there is no get ripped quick scheme and it takes dedication and a lot of hard work (unless you're a superior genetics nob who can eat anything and not lift and maintain a superior physique) |
