I'm so torn between the AMD FX-8350 and a few of the i5 Intel processors. I don't mind spending a bit more for a lot more processor.

I will overclocking as much as possible with a corsair h105 liquid cooler and I'm planning on getting a "EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Superclocked ACX Video Card"

So any opinions will be appreciated, I'm currently leaning towards AMD for the value for money and overclock ability.

Corsair coolers are poo, you do not want. A recent thread about an H50 dying: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=292487

You'll get better cooling and a longer life from the Antec kit that Cansa recommends in that thread.

AMD processors will give you a bigger overclock but you'll have a better CPU if you go for the Intel chips even though you won't be able to overclock them as much.

I was in this same boat, went for the AMD due to the cost:performance ratio, the difference for my purpose was negligible but the cost was about £60 different for similar performance (albeit slightly higher)

I have a coolermaster 212 cooler on mine, does the job fine

If cost is an issue consider an fx 8320 rather than an 8350, near enough the same chip just clocked lower

believe it or not, the older phenom II x4 are still holding there own against the much more expnsive (and newer) i5 and i7 intel cpus in games, moslty due to the fact that games arent very well multi threaded, this is also why the newer hyper threaded multi cored such as the 8xxx cpus don't perform so well in single thread applications (like games). AMDs primary market is server which is why they multi threeaded application perfomance is good by comparison to that of intel. intel hyper threading gain some where in the region of 10-15%, amd claim something 20% for there system - no matter what you get, swithc of hyper threading

AMD are still killing it for GPUs too so that maybe worth a look.

overclocking purely for gaming is kinda silly, most games put very little load onto the CPU providing you have the GPUs to back it up. with that said you may gain a little if you clock the ht link on AMD cpus a little, this will have the affect unless other wise tweaked of clocking both the ram and cpu. so with that in mind, a decent air cooler will give you all the cooling you need, even with a mild overclock, artic do some pretty serious coolers, and akasa is fairly underated. other than that, custom water loop is the only thing iw ould suggest for heavy overclocks, run Phenom II x4 at 4Ghz staying below 55*C and 1.55v-core

you will also need to look into your ram situation, tight cas latency can be better than fast clocks, specially on the ddr3. then there is the harddrive situation, go ssd for OS, and maybe have a second for running heavy games, along side a normal machanical for lighter games and gerneral storage. once you have some idea you then have to choose an apropiate mother board, PSU and case - very dependant on the final choice of GPUs and weather you are going to use sli or crossfire or if you can get a board that has lucid hydra it will not matter.

the final choice will depend on what you are going to use the machine for and what application you are going to run.

as idea, my mian rig should really be upgraded for more threads as i am increasing running multi threaded apps for photo editing and alikes but the 4 cores run everything i need and a good rate. i built another rig to programme PICs and display data sheets and circuit diagram for hard ware development and that run a phenom I x4 @ 3Ghz and it over kill.

the best bit of advice, decid e what you want the machine to do before you even think about buying anything.

AMDs only really make sense if you are running the onboard GPU imo. Otherwise it boils down to what you can afford, AMD allows you to save a few bob off the bat whilst Intel tends to be the better long term proposition and will likely continue to be unless GPU development speeds back up again.

As above, it depends what you want to spend. Personally I'm planning on getting an 8350 rather than an i5, then having more to spend on the graphics card.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

From that chart you can see the 8350 is better than a lot of Intel processors that are more expensive, but Intel dominate the top of the table.

Just note that games with support for '8' cores are far and few between. Not to mention that passmark is far more sympathetic to pile-dozer's half FP setup than most.

Remove the GPU bottleneck and the 8350 still gets crushed every time.
