 |

Guys, I need help with choosing a gaming console for my kids. Now let me start by saying I know nothing about gaming consoles. I am in I.T. but have zero interest in gaming so these things have passed me by
At my house they have an xbox360. At their mothers house they have an xbox360 (each ), a PS3 and a Wii.
At the moment Tesco have a clubcard boost on and so I am thinking ahead toward Christmas as I have a huge amount of vouchers to use and consoles are in the boost at the moment so saving me a fortune.
I was thinking of getting them an xbox one but I can see huge arguments (they are 10 and 13) over who gets to use what console.
So, I am looking in to the PS4 but from what I have read, this console is not backward compatible with PS3 games. Is that really the case or does anyone know if this has changed or if it will be something that will be switched on with a firmware update at some point?
I have also considered a PS3
Okay, so it is an older console but at least they could use their games on it (they have a fair few PS3 ones at their mums that I bought for them). Is it really that old tech now that it is not worth paying £230 for one plus whatever another dual shock controller costs?
I have googled the PS4 and am getting some people saying that it will never have backwards compatibility but others saying it could happen.
Also, can you play xbox360 games on the one? Could I use their current xbox live subscription on the one?
As I say, I genuinely have no idea about consoles and have no interest in them so any advice would be very helpful. ____________________ Yamaha TZR250 - love the smell of TTS!!!!

Wii U is the only backwards compatible console out there today. Can handle Wii and Gamecube games and use Wii accessories. Also handles other Nintendo consoles via virtual emulator.
I'm only waiting for the Wii U to get cheaper, or for the new GT for PS4 to buy a new console, what ever comes first I get. Wii U costs the same like 2 years now. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Personally, I went for a PS4.
Reasons at the time:
-Cheap
-Smaller (also has integrated power transformer, not a house brick on the lead)
-More powerful (Yes, it is)
-Doesn't require Kinect
-Actually designed for gaming, rather than to be a 'media hub'
I should point out that Microsoft have since released a version of the console that matches the price of the PS4 and doesn't come with Kinect, so that's two problems solved.
The cynic in me doesn't trust the blu-ray deal, however. Blu-ray is Sony's baby and the Xbox One uses it, despite being the only real competitor.
With regard to the PS3, I'm sorry to say that I don't think the kids will appreciate a console that they already have access to as much as they would appreciate an upgrade. ____________________ This post is probably not serious and shouldn't be taken literally.

Arguably, external power supply keeps temps down inside the console itself.

Not a relevant point with consoles, now both are using the same architecture, ports are going to happen far quicker and easier, but they will still be made to run on the least powerful of systems, so there is no benefit to the extra power other than with Sony exclusives.

Blu-ray is NOT Sony's, Sony are only 1 of many companies in a group that developed Blu-Ray between them, including Philips, Samsung, TDK, LG, Hitachi.
Blu-Ray disc association is responsible for the licensing of this etc, full list of directors is here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Association
Sony is only 1 of many, so there should be no issues with MS using Blu-Ray and was a good move.

I have to agree with this part. As a kid, I would be very disappointed with a PS3 if I had a PS3, Wii and a 360. Once I saw that size box wrapped up, I'd be expecting XB1/PS4. |

Cheers guys. If the xbox one isn't backward compatible either then there will be no advantage to getting one I guess.
I might stump up for a PS4 and spend the months leading up to xmas (can't believe I am thinking of xmas ) getting four or five decent titles they will enjoy.
Totally see the logic regarding the PS3. I would also have been hacked off as a kid getting a bit of old tech, not exactly something you want to talk about with your mates ____________________ Yamaha TZR250 - love the smell of TTS!!!!

Personally I'd wait until there are some genuinely killer titles on one or both before upgrading. At the moment there's not much of a library other than those games also released with slightly less beautiful graphics on previous generation consoles. Waiting until they've been out for 12-18 months (allows for bug fixes, revisions, price drops, possibility of picking up a great deal on the early adopters who got bored quickly etc) and then going for one makes sense. It sounds like they have enough consoles in different places that they're not going wanting at the moment.
(But then, I remember what being a kid is like, you want everything NEW right NOW. That's how much of a fine art we got capitalism down to, yo. ) ____________________ .

As for backwards compatibility PS are going to release a cloud streaming service of old games, unless that's changed since I saw the press release thingy.
I like the PS4, I got the PS+ to play online with mates and a few of my die hard XBox friends chose PS4 this time round are very impressed too.
PS+ costs £40/year but you get free games on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, I have the PS3 and have had Grid 2, Metro Last Light, Bioshock Infinite Borderlands 2 amongst others that you can play for as long as you hold a PS+ subscription, they're great games too. PS4, obviously there haven't been any big titles because it's still in its infancy but the indie games are quite good and very entertaining.
One thing I can't get my head around, this applies to XB1 aswell, Why are the digital downloads of games a tenner more expensive than a disc I can buy in the shop?!?! ____________________ I'm Sam; Northern, Ginger, Lover

The Wii U does NOT 'handle' Gamecube games, only Wii ones. The original Wii did take Gamecube games. You can, however, use your Gamecube controller with the Wii U.
The 'virtual emulator' means you have to buy the game again, even if you already own it as a cartridge. The list is somewhat limited, and there's no Gamecube games on there yet:

So no gamecube then. Well, to be honest, there are not many of good gamecube games anyway. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Got 2 * Xbox 360s, 1 * PS3, 1 * Wii, 1 * PS4, 1 * Gaming PC
Will be also getting an Xbox 1. In fact its the kids birthday present for the end of August (2 of them 4 days apart).
Always had more than one console. Always will, Been in to games from the start and now in my 40s. Had everything from Gransdtands, to Spectrums/CPC 464, 6128, ST, STE, Amiga, Megadrive,Playstation, Dreamcast, PS One, Playstation 2,Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3... (Must have missed a few in there also)
Always like Halo, Always liked Uncharted.
Cheapest for Games I would say would be Steam. For example the latest Lego Movie Video Game we got for ~ £5.80. LEgo Hobbit £10. The games are identical if not better to the PS4/Xbox One. Plus you can use your 360 remote on the PC.
Only downside you are playing games on a 23" instead of the big family TV. ____________________ I've a twin and a 4. |
